Guan Shuxian and Cai Shudu were sons of King Wen of Zhou and younger brothers of King Wu. King Wu had ten full brothers. Their mother was Tai Si, the official wife of King Wen. Their eldest son was Boyikao, the second was King Wu Fa, the third was Guan Shuxian, the fourth was Zhou Gong Dan, the fifth was Cai Shudu, the sixth was Cao Shuzhenduo, the seventh was Cheng Shuwu, the eighth was Huo Shuchu, the ninth was Kang Shufeng, and the tenth was Ran Jizai. Ran Jizai was the youngest. Among these ten full brothers, only Fa and Dan were virtuous, assisting King Wen on his left and right. Therefore, King Wen passed over Boyikao and named Fa as the crown prince. After King Wen died, Fa ascended to the throne; this was King Wu. Boyikao had already died before that.

After King Wu had defeated the Yin ruler Zhou and pacified the world, he enfeoffed meritorious ministers and his brothers. Thus, Shuxian was enfeoffed at Guan, and Shudu at Cai. The two brothers assisted Wu Geng Luxu, the son of Zhou, in governing the remnants of the Yin people. Shudan was enfeoffed at Lu and served as regent for the Zhou dynasty, becoming known as the Duke of Zhou. Shuzhenduo was enfeoffed at Cao, Shuwu at Cheng, and Shuchu at Huo. Kangshufeng and Ranjizai were both young and had not yet received enfeoffment.

After King Wu died, Crown Prince Cheng was still a child, so Zhou Gong Dan took sole charge of the royal court. Guan Shu and Cai Shu suspected that the Duke of Zhou would be detrimental to Crown Prince Cheng, so they allied with Wu Geng to start a rebellion. Zhou Gong Dan, acting on the orders of King Cheng, led a campaign to punish and kill Wu Geng, executed Guan Shu, and exiled Cai Shu. He banished him, relocating him with ten chariots and seventy attendants following him. The remaining Yin people were divided into two groups: one was enfeoffed to Weizi Qi at Song, in order to continue the ancestral rites of the Yin dynasty; the other group was enfeoffed under Kang Shu as ruler of Wei, and he became known as Duke Kang of Wei. Jizai was enfeoffed at Ran. Ran Ji and Kang Shu both exhibited exemplary conduct. Thus, the Duke of Zhou appointed Kang Shu as Minister of Justice for the Zhou dynasty and Ran Ji as Minister of Works, to assist King Cheng in governance; they both earned great reputations throughout the world.

Cai Shudu died after being relocated. His son was named Hu, who reformed his conduct and led with virtue and benevolence. The Duke of Zhou heard about this and appointed Hu as an official in the state of Lu, which then achieved good governance. Thus, the Duke of Zhou spoke to King Cheng on his behalf and reinstated Hu at Cai in order for him to continue the ancestral rites for Cai Shu; this was Pizi Zhong. The remaining five uncles all went to their respective fiefdoms and none served as officials under the Son of Heaven.

The next day, he searched in Cao but found no such person. The dreamer warned his son, "After I die, if you hear that Gongsun Qiang is in power, be sure to leave Cao and avoid the disaster of Cao." When Boyang ascended the throne, he took great interest in hunting with bows and arrows. In the sixth year, a commoner from Cao named Gongsun Qiang also enjoyed hunting with bows and arrows; he once caught a white goose and presented it to Boyang, while discussing techniques of archery and hunting. Thus, the state of Cao was extinguished and its ancestral worship ceased.

Grand Historian said: I have examined the case of Duke Gonggong of Cao, who did not employ Xi Fui. At that time, there were three hundred men riding in decorated carriages; this shows that he understood nothing but failed to cultivate virtue. And yet, was it not the dream of Zhen Dua who wished to preserve the ancestral rites of Cao? If Gongsun Qiang had not reformed governance, the ancestral worship of Shu Dua would have been suddenly extinguished.
