| | On the first day, affairs are without affairs, reaching a state where there is nothing to be done. Commentary says: "Affairs without affairs"—this is acting in accordance with the Dao.

| | Second, when affairs are at the pivot, not consulting nor advising, one loses their wise token. Commentary says: "Not consulting nor advising"—this signifies the loss of wisdom.

| | Third, times pass and return; there is no room even for a hair between them. Commentary says: "Times passing and returning"—this means not losing the right timing.

| | Fifth, when one attends to their affairs, the king bestows food upon them. Commentary says: "Attending to their affairs"—this is fulfilling the duties entrusted.

| | Sixth, bearing great responsibility and acting on one's own, when calamity comes it cannot be rescued. Commentary says: "Bearing great responsibility and acting on one's own"—how can this be endured?

| | Seventh, the elder supports the orphan; the young boy carries a pot. Commentary says: "The elder supports the orphan"—the child understands the way.
