曾子曰:敢问圣人之德,无以加于孝乎。子曰:天地之性人为贵,贵其异于万物也。人之行莫大于孝,孝者德之本,又何加焉。孝莫大于严父,莫大尊严其父。严父莫大于配天,尊严其父,莫大于配天,生事爱敬,死为神主也。则周公其人也。尊严其父配食天者,周公为之。昔者,周公郊祀后稷以配天,郊者祭天名,后稷者周公始祖。宗祀文王于明堂以配上帝,文王,周公之父,明堂,天子布政之宫,上帝者,天之别名。是以四海之内,各以其职来祭,周公行孝朝,越裳重译来贡,是得万国之欢心也。夫圣人之德,又何以加于孝乎。孝悌之至,通于神明,岂圣人所能加。圣人因严以教敬,因亲以教爱,因人尊严其父,教之为敬,因亲近于其父,教之为爱,顺人情也。圣人之教,不肃而成,圣人因人情而教民,民皆乐之,故不肃而成也。其政不严而治,其身正,不令而行,故不严而治。其所因者本也。本谓孝也。父子之道,天性也。性,常也。君臣之义也。君臣非有天性,但义合耳。父母生之,续莫大焉。父母生子,骨肉相连属,复何加焉。君亲临之,厚莫重焉。君亲择贤,显之以爵,宠之以禄,厚之至也。故不爱其亲而爱他人者,谓之悖德,人不能爱其亲而爱他人亲者,谓之悖德。不敬其亲而敬他人者,谓之悖礼,不能敬其亲而敬他人之亲者,谓之悖礼也。以顺则逆,以悖为顺,则逆乱之道也。民无则焉。则,法。不在于善,而皆在于凶德,恶人不能以礼为善,乃化为恶,若桀纣是也。虽得之,君子所不贵,不以其道,故君子不贵。君子则不然,言思可道,君子不为逆乱之道,言中诗书,故可传道也。行思可乐,动中规矩,故可乐也。德义可尊,可尊法也。作事可法,可法则也。容止可观,威仪中礼故可观。进退可度,难进而尽忠,易退而补过。以临其民,是以其民畏而爱之,畏其刑罚,爱其德义。则而象之,故能成其德教,而行其政令,《诗》云:“淑人君子,其仪不忒,”淑,善也。忒,差也。善人君子,威仪不差,可法则也。
