夫聖人之修其身,所以御羣臣也。御羣臣也。所以化萬民也。其法輕而易守,其禮簡而易持,其求諸己也誠,其化諸人也深,苟非其人,道不虛行,苟非其道,治不虛應,是以古之聖君之於其臣也。疾則視之無數,死則臨其大斂小斂,為徹膳不舉樂,豈徒色取仁而實違之者哉。乃慘怛之心,出於自然,形於顔色,世未有不自然而能得人自然者也。色取仁而實違之者,謂之虛,不以誠待其臣,而望其臣以誠事己、謂之愚,虛愚之君,未有能得人之死力者也。故書稱君為元首,臣為股肱,期其一體相須而成也。而儉僞淺薄之士,有商鞅、韓非、申不害者,專飾巧辯邪僞之術,以熒惑諸侯,著法術之書,其言云,尊君而卑臣,上以尊君取容於人主,下以卑臣得售其奸說,此聽受之端,參言之要,不可不慎,元首已尊矣。而復云尊之,是以君過乎頭也。股肱已卑矣。而復曰卑之,是使其臣不及乎手足也。君過乎頭而臣不及乎手足,是離其體也。君臣體離,而望治化之洽,未之前聞也。
