The pattern resembles sawteeth drawn in white lines, symbolizing the interlocking trowels. A line from the Shi Jing says: "Ju ye wei ceng." Also, the Erya states: "A large board is called ye," Guo Pu comments that it refers to a wooden form used for building walls; the popular character is 㸣. Yu qie qie, shiwu.
