《家语》曰:季康子问于孔子曰:“旧闻五帝之名而不知其实,请问何谓?”孔子曰:“昔丘也闻诸老聃,天有五行,木金水火土,分时化育以成万物,一岁三百六十日,五行,行至七十三日化生长育,万物莫不成也。其神谓之五帝。五帝,五行之神,佐天理万物者也。而说皆谓之名字,亦为妖怪而妄也。古之王者易代改号,取法五行更王,终始相生,亦象其义也。法五行更王,终始相生,以木德王天下,其次所生之行转相承。故其生为明王者,死配五行。是以太皞配木,炎帝配火,少皞配金,颛顼配水,黄帝配土。”康子曰:“太皞氏其始之木,何也?”孔子曰:“五行用事,先起于木,木,东方也,万物之初皆出焉。是故王者作而首以木德王天下,则以所生之行转相承也。”康子曰:“吾闻勾芒为木正,祝融为火正,蓐收为金正,玄冥为水正,后土为土正,此则五行之主也,而不称何?”孔子曰:“凡五正者,五行之官名也。言但王五行之官名,安得同名为帝。五行佐成上帝而称五帝,太皞之属配焉,亦云帝,从其号。昔者,少皞氏之子有四叔,曰重,曰该,曰熙,曰修,实能理金木水火土。使重为勾芒,该为蓐收,修及熙为玄冥,颛顼氏之子曰黎为祝融,共工氏子曰勾龙为后土,此五者,各以所能业其官职,生为上公,死为贵神,别称五祀,不得同帝也。”五祀,上公之神耳,故不得称帝。五正不及五帝,五帝不及天地也。
