《家語》曰:孔子學琴于師襄子,襄子曰:「吾雖以擊磬為官,然能于琴。今子于琴已習,可以益矣。」孔子曰:「丘未得其為志也。」有間,曰:「已習其志,可以益矣。」孔子曰:「丘未得其為人也。」有間,孔子有所繆然深思焉,繆然,深思貌也。有所然,高望而遠眺。眺,見。曰:「丘殆得其為人矣,始近黮然黑,黮,黑貌也。頎然長,頎,長貌也。曠然如望羊,曠然,用志曠遠也。望,遠也。望羊,視遠。奄有四方,奄同也。文王時,三分天下有其二,后周有四方,文王之功上也。非文王,其孰能為此?」師襄子避席,葉拱而對曰:攝拱,兩手薄心。「君聖人也。」其傳曰:《文王操》。
又曰:子路鼓瑟,孔子聞之,謂冉有曰:「甚矣!由之不才也。夫先王之制音也,奏中聲以為節,流入于南,不歸北。夫南者,生育之鄉;北者,殺伐之域也。故君子之音,溫和居中,以養生育之氣,憂愁之感不加乎心,暴厲之動不存乎禮。夫然者,乃所以為治安之風也。小人之音則不然,亢厲微末以象殺伐之義,中和之感不載乎心,溫和之動不存于體。夫然者,乃所以為亂亡之風。」
