| The cock has already crowed. The morning is already full. Jimiang and Chao Ying were both consorts. The ruler. the customary rites by which one may rise up. It is not the rooster that crows, but the sound of a bluebottle fly. If the consort takes the sound of flies as the crowing of a rooster and thus rises earlier than usual, it is an expression of reverence. | ||

| Futian was composed by a high official to satirize Duke Xiang. Without rites and righteousness yet seeking great achievements, without cultivating virtue yet seeking the feudal lords' allegiance—ambitious in purpose but weary of heart; thus what he seeks is not achieved through proper means. | ||
| 4 | 齐风: | 无田甫田，维莠骄骄，兴也。甫，大也。大田过度而无人功，终不能获，兴者，喻人君欲立功致治，必勤身修德，积小以成高大也。无思远人，劳心忉忉。忉忉，忧劳，此言无德而求诸侯，徒劳其心忉忉然。 |
| Do not till a wide field, for weeds grow luxuriantly there. This is an allusion. Fu means "great" or "large." A large field cultivated beyond measure without human effort will ultimately yield nothing. This allusion implies that a ruler who wishes to achieve great accomplishments and bring about good governance must personally work diligently, cultivate virtue, and accumulate small efforts to build up to lofty achievements. Do not dwell on distant people; your anxious thoughts are in vain. Dao dao means anxious and weary. This line implies that seeking the feudal lords without virtue is merely a futile preoccupation, causing one's heart to be anxiously burdened. |
