子曰：譬如为山，未成一篑，止，吾止也。篑，土笼也。此劝人于道德也。为山者其功虽已多，未成一笼而中道止者，我不以其前功多而善之，见其志不遂，故不与也。譬如平地，虽覆一篑，进，吾往也。平地者将进加功，虽始覆一篑，我不以其功少而薄之，据其欲进而与之。
