【论】晋鲁褒《钱神论》曰:有司空公子,富贵不齿,盛服而游京邑,驻驾乎市里,顾见綦毌先生,班白而徒行。公子曰:嘻,子年已长矣。徒行空手,将何之乎。先生曰:欲之贵人。公子曰:学诗乎。曰:学矣。学礼乎。曰:学矣。学易乎。曰:学矣。公子曰:诗不云乎。币帛筐篚,以将其厚意,然后忠臣嘉宾,得尽其心,礼不云乎。男贽玉帛禽鸟,女贽榛栗枣修,易不云乎。随时之义大矣哉。吾视子所以,观子所由,岂随世哉。虽曰已学,吾必谓之未也。先生曰:吾将以清谈为筐篚,以机神为币帛,所谓礼云礼云,玉帛云乎哉者已。公子拊髀大笑曰:固哉子之云也。既不知古,又不知今,当今之急,何用清谈,时易世变,古今异俗,富者荣贵,贫者贱辱,而子尚质,而子守实,无异于遗剑刻舡,胶柱调瑟,贫不离于身名,誉不出乎家室,固其宜也。昔神农氏没,黄帝尧舜,教民农桑,以币帛为本,上智先学变通之,乃掘铜山,俯视仰观,铸而为钱,故使内方象地,外员象天,钱之为体,有乾有坤,其积如山,其流如川,动静有时,行藏有节,市井便易,不患耗折,难朽象寿,不匮象道,故能长久,为世神宝,亲爱如兄,字曰孔方,失之则贫弱,得之则富强,无翼而飞,无足而走,解严毅之颜,开难发之口,钱多者处前,钱少者居后,诗云,哿矣富人,哀哉茕独,岂是之谓乎。钱之为言泉也。百姓日用,其源不匮,无远不往,无深不至,京邑衣冠,疲劳讲肆,厌闻清谈,对之睡寐,见我家兄,莫不惊视,钱之所佑,吉无不利,何必读书,然后富贵,由是论之,可谓神物,无位而尊,无势而热,排朱门,入紫闼,钱之所在,危可使安,死可使活,钱之所去,贵可使贱,生可使杀,是故忿诤辩讼,非钱不胜,孤弱幽滞,非钱不拔,怨仇嫌恨,非钱不解,令问笑谈,非钱不发。谚曰:钱无耳,可暗使,岂虚也哉。又曰:有钱可使鬼,而况于人乎。子夏云,死生有命,富贵在天,吾以死生无命,富贵在钱,何以明之,钱能转祸为福,因败为成,危者得安,死者得生,性命长短,相禄贵贱,皆在乎钱,天何与焉。天有所短,钱有所长,四时行焉。百物生焉。钱不如天,达穷开塞,振贫济乏,天不如钱,若臧武仲之智,卞庄子之勇,冉求之艺,文之以成人矣。今之成人者何必然,唯孔方而已,夫钱穷者使通达,富者能使温暖,贫者能使勇悍。故曰:君无财则士不来,君无赏则士不往。谚曰:官无中人,不如归田,虽有中人,而无家兄,何异无足而欲行,无翼而欲翔,使才如颜子,容如子张,空手掉臂,何所希望,不如早归,广修农商,舟车上下,役使孔方,凡百君子,同尘和光,上交下接,名誉益彰。
