計然者，蔡丘濮上人，姓辛，名文子，其先晉國公子也。為人有內無外，形狀似不及人。少而明，學陰陽，見微而知著。其行浩浩，其志汎汎，不肯自顯諸侯。陰所利者七國，天下莫知，故稱曰「計然」。時遨遊海澤，號曰「漁父」。范蠡請見越王，計然曰：「越王為人鳥喙，不可同利也。」 |
| | Ji Ran was a native of Pu Shang, Cai Qiu; his surname was Xin and his given name Wenzi. His ancestors were the marquises of the Jin state. He had an inner nature but no outward display, and in appearance he seemed to be less than others. From a young age he was intelligent; he studied yin-yang, and could discern the significant from subtle signs. His conduct was vast and expansive, his aspirations broad and general; he refused to recommend himself to feudal lords. He secretly benefited seven states, yet no one in the world knew about it, so he was called "Ji Ran." At that time, he wandered leisurely by lakes and seas, and was known as "the old fisherman." Fan Li requested an audience with King Yue, but Ji Ran said, "King Yue has a bird's beak; he cannot share benefits with others."
