蓋朋友之道,有義則合,無義則離。善則久要不忘平生之言,惡則忠告善誨之,否則止,無自辱焉。故君子不為可棄之行,不患人之遺己也;信有可歸之德,不病人之遠己也。不幸或然,則躬自厚而薄責于人,怨其遠矣;求諸己而不求諸人,咎其稀矣。夫遠怨稀咎之機,咸在乎躬,莫之致也。子夏之門人問交于子張,而二子各有聞乎夫子,然則以交誨也,商也寬,故告之以拒人。師也褊,故訓之以容眾,各從其行而矯之,至于仲尼之正教,則汎愛眾而親仁。故非善不喜,非仁不親,交游以方,會友以文,可無貶也。穀梁赤曰:「心志既通,名譽不聞,友之罪也。」今將患其流而塞其源,病其末而刈其本。無乃未若擇其正而黜其邪與?與其彼農皆黍,而獨稷焉。夫黍亦神農之嘉穀,與稷竝為粢盛也。使交可廢則黍其愆矣。括二論而言之,則刺薄者博而洽,斷交者貞而孤。孤有《羔羊》之節,與其不獲已而矯時也,走將從夫孤焉。
