《女訓 - Instructions for Women 》

English translation: AI and Chinese Text Project users [?] Library Resources
The heart is like the face; therefore, people take great care to adorn it. If the face is not cleansed for a day, then dust and dirt will defile it; the mind, if for one morning does not think of goodness, will allow evil to enter. Everyone knows how to adorn their face, yet neglects to cultivate their heart; this is indeed a delusion. If the face is not adorned, the foolish would call it ugly; if the heart is not cultivated, the virtuous would call it evil. To be called ugly by the foolish is still tolerable; but to be called evil by the virtuous, where could one find a place to belong? Therefore, when looking into the mirror and wiping one's face, one should reflect on the purity of one's heart; when applying cosmetics, one should think about the harmony of one's heart; when adding powder, one should contemplate the freshness of one's heart; łoż when oiling one's hair, one should reflect on the moistness and nourishment of one's heart; when using a comb, one should think about how orderly and well-arranged one's heart is; when styling one's hair into a bun, one should contemplate the uprightness of one's heart. When tucking in one's temples, one should think about the tidiness and orderliness of one's heart.
