On the previous day, Taile Ling set up the court music of Gongxuan, and Guchui Ling arranged twelve stands in the courtyard of the shooting hall according to the musical mode of that month; songs were performed at each level as appropriate. The eastern ensemble was placed east of the eastern steps, facing west; the western ensemble was located west of the western steps, facing east. The northern and southern ensembles, along with the ascending singers, were arranged to broadly open up the central area. This was for avoiding arrows. Zhang Xionghou, ninety paces away from the hall, set up a stand ten paces west of Houshi and ten paces north. The stand was an object placed at the side of the target to avoid arrows; it was made of leather, seven chi in height and width. If there were already a buttress for this purpose, then it would not be set up. Five Bei were placed in front of the courtyard, slightly to the west. Bei was three chi long, three cun wide, one and a half cun thick, with the head of a dragon and body of a snake, used to hold arrows. The positions for those attending the archery ceremony were arranged in front of the western steps, facing east with ranks ordered from north to south. The positions for Sima were arranged south of the attendants' positions, facing east. The positions for those responsible for retrieving arrows were placed east of the stand, facing west. The shooting positions for the attendants were located below the hall's steps, slightly to the west in front of the emperor, arranged horizontally and facing south. The attendants with bows and arrows waited outside the western gate. Awards were arranged below the eastern steps, slightly to the east. The penalty vessel was placed below the western steps, slightly to the west. Feng was used to hold the penalty cup; it resembled a Dou but was larger and lower in height. The penalty zun (vessel) was set up west of the western steps, arranged north to south according to the depth of the hall. Baskets were placed west of the zun, extending to the south; they contained cups and were added with caution.

On that day at dawn, the emperor put on his Wu bian headdress and emerged; music was played, the imperial procession was announced, and the civil and military attendants followed as per usual protocol. Civil and military officials all wore official robes; they were introduced by the official in charge of greetings for an audience, with music performed and procedures followed as in the Yuangui ceremony. After three rounds of wine, Shizhong presented a report saying: "The officials have made all preparations; please proceed with the archery." Shizhong then stepped forward to receive the imperial decree, and upon returning, announced: "The decree says 'yes.'" Princes of the kingdom and officials below them all descended. Civil officials stood below the eastern steps, facing west with ranks ordered from north to south; Military officials stood below the western steps, behind those participating in the archery, facing east with ranks arranged from north to south. The spear-bearing squad stood in groups on both sides; two Qinniu Beishen officials horizontally presented the imperial bow and arrows, standing on the upper part of the eastern steps facing west, with the one holding the bow positioned to the north. A dian was set up in front of the person holding the bow; on it were placed the imperial arrow rest, quiver, and basket. Jue is equivalent to today's shooting pad. Shi is the same as today's arrow guard. Those responsible for retrieving arrows held banners, started from south of the stand, moved eastward toward Houshi, reached Houshi, and then stood facing north behind it. "Fu Hou" means standing with one's back to the target and facing inward. The officials in charge wanted all archers to see both the target and the banner, so as to be deeply determined to hit it. The attendants went outside the western gate to retrieve bows and arrows, holding the bow with both hands, inserting the arrow into their belt; Jin means "to insert." Chengshi refers to four arrows. They entered and stood west of the shooting position below the hall, facing east. Sima ascended from the western steps, stood in front of the west ying pillar, facing south, and waved the bow to command those responsible for retrieving arrows to move away from Houshi. Those responsible for retrieving arrows moved away from Houshi, walked ten paces westward, then turned north and proceeded to the stand, where they stopped. Sima descended the western steps and returned to his position. One Qinniu Langjiang presented the arrow rest and quiver in a basket, while Qinniu Jiangjun presented the bow. Another Qinniu Langjiang carried arrows; they advanced to stand east of the imperial couch, slightly south, facing west. Langjiang knelt and placed the basket slightly east of the imperial couch, wiped it with a cloth, took out the arrow rest, raised it, and announced its placement. Then Qinniu Langjiang again knelt to take out the quiver, raised it for announcement, then withdrew with the basket, placed it on the dian, and returned to his position. Qinniu Jiangjun faced north and drew the bow, using his sleeves to smooth both sides of the bow's curve; he pulled it up twice and down once. The "left and right curves" of the bow, refer to the upper and lower parts of the bow. It means wiping the upper part twice and the lower part once with one's sleeve. Facing west, he held the bow handle in his left hand and the arrow in his right to present it to the emperor. After completing this, he stepped back and stood slightly behind the east side of the imperial couch. Qinniu Langjiang used a cloth to wipe each arrow clean before presenting them one by one for the emperor's use. When the emperor was about to shoot, Xielv Lang raised his flag and first played the drum, bugle, and five sections of the musical piece "Zoushu." The emperor then shot; the first arrow corresponded with the sixth section, the second arrow with the seventh section, continuing up to the ninth section. Xielv Lang lowered his flag and the music ceased. Qinniu Jiangjun reported the results of each shot with an arrow; a hit was called "huo," a low shot "liu," a high shot "yang," a leftward shot "zuofang," and a rightward shot "youfang." Liu means the arrow was too short to reach the target. Yang refers to an arrow that flew past the target, while "left and right" indicate arrows that were off-center and not straight. After the emperor finished shooting, Qinniu Jiangjun received the bow from the east side of the throne, facing west, then stepped back and handed it to another Qinniu official on the upper part of the eastern stairs. Qinniu Langjiang took the arrow rest and quiver into a basket, stepped back to place them on the dian, then returned to his position.

The attendants advanced, ascended the shooting mat, stood facing north, turned left in a circle, faced east to draw their bows, and held arrows while facing south. Xielv Lang raised the flag; music was played but no drum or bugle sounds were made. After playing three sections of "Lishou," they then released their arrows. If there were many attendants shooting, they would all shoot at the same time. The first shot corresponded with the fourth section of music, the second shot with the fifth section, continuing up to seven sections. Xielu Lang lowered his flag and ceased the music. The archers turned right in a circle, facing east to lower their bows, then stood facing north and withdrew back to their positions below the western steps. The number of participants shooting could be adjusted at the time according to instructions. If officials of the ninth rank and above were all granted permission to shoot, then those below the sixth rank would be invited to shoot on a later day, under supervision by the responsible officials. Sima ascended the western steps and stood in front of the western ying pillar, facing south to wave the bow and command the retrieval of arrows. He then descended and returned to his position. Those retrieving arrows handed the emperor's arrows to Qinniu Lang at the lower part of the eastern steps; the attendants placed their own arrows on Bei, arranged them broadly from north to south. The attendants laid down their bows at their positions and stood facing north in the front of the courtyard with ranks ordered from east to west. The responsible officials presented a request to reward those attendants who hit the target and punish those who missed it. Shizhong announced: "The decree says 'yes.'" The responsible officials stood west of Bei, facing east, and supervised the announcement of each arrow shot. Those retrieving arrows called out the names of those who had hit the target. Those who hit the target stood below the eastern steps, facing north with ranks ordered from west to east; those who missed stood below the western steps, facing north with ranks arranged from east to west. Both groups performed two bows in unison. The responsible officials, below the eastern steps, distributed awards in order; after receiving them, those who had been awarded returned to their positions facing west. The wine-pourer, standing west of the penalty zun and facing east, poured the wine. He then advanced, knelt to place it on Feng while facing north, stepped back, and stood south of Feng, slightly to the west. Those who missed advanced to the southern side of Feng, knelt facing north to take the cup from on top of Feng, stood and drank it in one go, then knelt again to place the empty cup beneath Feng before stepping back to their original positions facing east. The wine-pourer knelt facing north to retrieve an empty cup, then poured and placed it as he had done before. Those who missed took turns continuing the drinking ritual in the same manner as before. Afterward, Dianye led princes of the kingdom and below as well as the attendants to stand in front of the courtyard facing north, arranged opposite each other with ranks starting from the front. After performing two bows, they were led out. The spear-bearing squad returned to their positions. The emperor entered, with music and the imperial procession announced as per usual protocol. The responsible officials took the bows and arrows outside the central gate, handed them to the attendants, who were then led out.

4 皇帝射於... :
若御射無侍射之人,則不設楅,不陳賞物,不設罰樽。若御燕遊小射,則常服,不陳樂懸,不行會禮,王公以下事訖出,無北面再拜之儀。
If no attendants participated in shooting when the emperor shot, then Bei would not be set up, awards would not be displayed, and a penalty zun would not be arranged. If the emperor conducted a small archery session during a banquet or leisure outing, he would wear regular attire; no court music ensembles would be arranged, and no formal ceremonies would take place. Princes of the kingdom and those below them would leave after completing their duties without performing the ritual of bowing twice while facing north.

On that day, at the break of dawn, nobles and officials below them all wore official robes, held bows and arrows, and were divided into left and right groups to be led in. They arrived at their positions outside the central gate. The emperor donned his ceremonial military cap and robe, and proceeded out; music was played, and the imperial procession moved forward as per usual protocol. The nobles and officials below all knelt at their positions to lay down their bows and arrows; the official in charge of ceremonies led them into a meeting with the emperor as per usual protocol. Before archery, a gathering ceremony was held first. After three rounds of wine were served, the officials in charge presented a request to grant permission for nobles and lower-ranking officials to shoot. The Attendant-in-Ordinary stepped forward to receive the imperial decree, then retreated and announced: "The edict says 'approved.'" Those about to shoot, including nobles and officials below, all descended in front of the courtyard, faced northward, stood opposite each other as a group, and after bowing twice, the official in charge led them out and back to their positions outside the central gate; they knelt to retrieve their bows and arrows, rose, held the bow with both hands, inserted an arrow into the quiver on their belt, and were then led by the official to their shooting positions. The officials in charge of shooting from both sides, the officer in charge of military matters, and those responsible for collecting arrows all took their positions. The attendants holding the penalty wine vessels stood to the south of the vessels, and those holding the bamboo baskets stood to the south of their respective baskets; all faced northward; the pourer stood west of the wine vessel, facing east. The arrow collector holding a flag walked ten bu from the south side of the target area toward the east, then arrived at the target and stood facing north behind it.

One official from each side in charge of shooting led the archery first. Both inserted an arrow into their belt, held the bow with two hands; the one on the left ascended via the eastern steps and the one on the right via the western steps. Upon reaching the steps, the left official faced westward while the right one faced eastward, they looked at each other and stood still, then both ascended, advanced forward to stand in front of their respective mats, turned northward together, and entered the shooting area. After standing still, those from the left side turned rightward and faced west to draw their bows; those from the right side turned leftward and faced east to draw theirs. Both then turned southward and held an arrow in one hand. "Jia" means placing an arrow on the bow. The officer in charge of military affairs ascended from the western steps, stood in front of the right-side shooter, turned leftward to face south, raised his bow, and signaled for the arrow collector to move away from the target. The arrow collector holding the flag moved away from the target, walked ten bu westward, then turned north and proceeded to the area of the target; he stopped upon arrival. Then they shot. The official on the left shot once, and then the one on the right shot once; they alternated until their shooting was completed. Afterward, the left-side official turned left to face west and lowered his bow, while the right-side official turned right to face east and did likewise. Both stood facing north, slightly stepped back, descended from the eastern and western steps respectively to the base of the steps, faced each other, and then withdrew to their original positions.

The officials in charge of shooting on both sides each stood before the positions of the nobles, facing northward and arranged six people from the beginning of the noble group. They led them up via the eastern and western steps following the same procedures as for the officials in charge of shooting. Upon reaching the shooting area, they stood opposite each other at the front, facing north. The one on the left turned rightward to face west and drew his bow; the one on the right turned leftward to face east and drew his bow. Both then faced south and held an arrow in hand. The officials in charge presented a report: "We request that the archery music be played for the nobles and lower-ranking officials." If there were two rounds of shooting, then in each round only the hitting of the central target was required; it would not be necessary to request permission for playing music. The Attendant-in-Ordinary advanced to receive the imperial order, then stepped back and announced: "The edict says 'approved.'" The Tongshi She Ren (attendant) received the order and, facing westward, informed the Taichang Qing. The Taichang Qing stood inside the western music ensemble area and, facing east, addressed the chief musician: "Play the music; keep a one-beat interval." This means that seven sections of music were played, with intervals between each section being equally spaced. The official in charge of shooting ascended from the western steps and stood slightly west of the position before the emperor, facing east to give a warning: "Do not shoot without hitting; do not hunt without success." One must not shoot at the edges of the target or hit beyond the area designated for collecting arrows. The archers all moved forward slowly and respectfully; the official in charge then withdrew, descended to his original position. The official in charge ascended the western steps again and gave a warning: "Do not shoot without the drum signal; do not release your arrows prematurely." If one does not follow the rhythm of the drum, even a hit will not count. The archers once again moved forward slowly and respectfully; then the official in charge withdrew and returned to his position. The Xielv Lang raised the flag, and the music of "Lishou" was played for three sections. After that, both sides shot once in coordination with the fourth section; then they each shot again to match the fifth section, continuing until all seven sections were completed. The Xielu Lang lowered his flag, and the music ceased. The archers from the left side turned leftward to face west and lowered their bows, while those on the right side turned rightward to face east and did the same. All then faced north, slightly stepped back, and descended via the eastern or western steps to stand at the base of the steps; they stood facing each other with backs toward the north until instructed to withdraw. The officials in charge on both sides successively selected six people each, and all ascended for shooting as before. Officials of fourth rank and below shot at the base of the hall; their procedures for ascending to and descending from the shooting area, as well as coordinating their shots with the music, followed the same protocol used on the upper hall floor. After completing their shooting, those of third rank and above as well as nearby attendants lowered their bows at the lower level and ascended back to their gathering positions. Officials of fourth rank and below all returned to their respective gathering positions and sat down. Those who had not yet shot remained standing, and continued shooting as before.

5 皇帝觀射... :

After all the archery was completed, the officer in charge of military affairs ascended to the hall, raised his bow to signal for the retrieval of arrows. One person each took the upper, middle, and lower arrows that had hit the target; one person also collected those that missed. They brought them to the front of the courtyard. The first arrow was then knelt down and placed on the first target board at its northern edge; subsequently, the remaining arrows were added in order onto their respective targets until all were placed. Each arrow retriever stood south of his assigned target board, facing northward. The nobles and officials below descended to the courtyard in front, where they stood holding their bows with backs toward the north.

The officials in charge presented a request for rewards to be given to those who hit the target and penalties imposed on those who missed. The Attendant-in-Ordinary received the imperial order, stepped back, and announced: "The edict says 'approved.'" The officials in charge stood west of the target board, facing east to oversee and announce the results of each shot. Each arrow retriever called out the name of the person who had hit the target. Those who hit the target stood below the eastern steps, facing west and arranged in a north-south line according to the frequency or accuracy of their hits. Those who did not hit the target i.e.,those who missed the target with all four arrows. stood below the western steps, facing east and arranged in a north-south order according to their official rank. Those on both the eastern and western sides bowed twice. The officials in charge distributed rewards in order at the base of the eastern steps; those who had received their rewards withdrew and returned to their positions facing west. The Ye Zhe led him back to his original position. The Taiguan Ling led the food offerings into the altar area, ascending the western steps. The Tai Zhu met and guided them on the altar to set up the offerings in front of the deity's seat. After completing this task, the Taiguan Ling and those below him descended back to their positions, while the Tai Zhu returned to the location of the wine vessels. The Ye Zhe led the sacrificing official to the wine and washing area, where he washed his hands and rinsed the wine cup. After completing these rituals, the Ye Zhe guided him up from the southern steps to the location of the wine offering. The attendant holding the wine vessel raised it for inspection, and the sacrificing official poured the wine. Then, led by the Ye Zhe, the sacrificing official advanced to in front of the deity's altar seat, knelt facing north to place down the cup, bowed his head in reverence, then rose, stepped back slightly and stood facing north. The Tai Zhu held the tablet and advanced to the right side of the deity's altar seat, kneeling facing east to read the sacrificial text: "On the first day of a certain year, with the lunar calendar marking [month], His Majesty respectfully dispatches his official Minister [Name] to solemnly announce to the spirits of Ma Zu Tiansi: At this spring season, we have brought mares for breeding in the pasture. We humbly present our specially prepared silk offerings and sacrificial wine, along with millet and various ritual items, clearly offering them to the spirit of Ma Zu Tiansi. May you kindly accept these offerings." After finishing, he rose. The sacrificing official performed two bows. The Tai Zhu advanced, knelt to place the tablet before the deity's altar seat, bowed his head in reverence and then rose, returning to the location of the wine vessel. The Tai Zhu poured the sacrificial wine into a cup, approached to the right side of the sacrificing official, and stood facing west. The sacrificing official performed two bows, received the cup, knelt down to pour a portion of wine as an offering, then drank the remaining contents in one go. The Tai Zhu stepped forward to receive the cup and returned it to the dian (a platform for placing ritual vessels). The sacrificing official bowed his head in reverence, then stood up. The Tai Zhu led the zhai lang (ritual attendants) forward to present the sacrificial platter, removing a portion of meat from before the deity and handing it over to the sacrificing official. The sacrificing official received the meat and passed it to a zhai lang, after which the Ye Zhe led him down from the southern steps back to his original position. The Tai Zhu advanced, knelt and removed the ritual food vessels, bowed in reverence, then rose and returned to the location of the wine container. The Feng Li said: "Bow twice." All those present performed two bows. Those who have already received the sacrificial wine and meat do not bow. The Feng Li again said: "Bow twice." All those present performed two bows again.

The Ye Zhe approached to the left of the sacrificing official and announced: "Please proceed to the position for observing the sacrificial fire." The Ye Zhe led the sacrifice official to the designated position for observing the burning of offerings, where he stood facing south. The Feng Li once again led his assistants to take their positions at the northeast side of the sacrificial fire altar. The Tai Zhu approached in front of the deity's altar, knelt to retrieve the silk offering, sacrificial tablet, and wine cup. He also placed on a platter the body of the sacrificed animal and rice made from millet and yellow millet. Rising, he descended via the southern steps, walked southward, then turned east at the southeast side of the firewood altar. Ascending the southern steps onto the firewood altar, he placed the silk offering, wine, sacrificial tablet, and food offerings on top of the stacked firewood. After completing this, the Feng Li declared: "The fire may now be lit." Two people each from the east and west sides used torches to ignite the offering. Once the fire was lit, they threw their torches onto the altar. When the fire had burned halfway through the stacked wood, the Ye Zhe approached to the sacrificing official's left and announced: "The ceremony is complete." He then led the sacrificing official and those below him out, while the Feng Li and assistants returned to their original positions. Zanyin led the Tai Zhu and all others back to their respective positions as attendants. After standing in place, Feng Li said: "Bow twice." The Tai Zhu and all those below him performed two bows each. Zanyin then led them out.

Before dawn on that day, all the guards stationed their troops according to schedule, formed ranks at the gates, and the inner ranks entered and arranged themselves below the steps as per usual protocol. The drum and bugle director led the Nuo participants to gather outside the palace gate. In various states and counties, before daybreak, the responsible officials informed the cishi or xianling, requesting permission to lead the Nuo participants inside. The palace attendants went to before the emperor's audience hall and reported: "The zhenszi are ready, please proceed with driving away the plague." Afterward, the emperor ordered six palace attendants to lead the Nuo participants in groups through the front Changle Gate and Yong'an Gate, entering sequentially until reaching the left and right Shangge halls, advancing while beating drums and shouting. Fangxiangshi held the halberd and raised the shield. In the Nuo rituals of various states and counties, just before daybreak, two eunuchs exited through the gate, each holding a green banner, to lead the participants inside. No eunuchs or outsiders were allowed to guide them. At this point, the Nuo ritual began: drums and nails were struck, all shouted loudly, and they entered while beating whips, halberds, and shields. The chant leader and zhenszi harmonized in chanting: "Jia eats miscellaneous things, Zhuwei eats plague, Xiongbo eats ghosts, Tengjian eats misfortune, Lanzhu eats guilt, Boqi eats dreams, Qiangliang and Zuming together eat those who are crucified or parasitic, Weisui eats observers, Cuodu eats giants, Qiongqi and Tenggen together eat 蛊 (malevolent spirits)." As the Nuo participants were about to leave, the Taizhu laid out a ritual mat in front of the central gate facing south. After they had exited, the slaughterer and zhai lang officials placed the sacrificial victim in a wooden chest, slaughtered it to the west of the ritual mat, laid it on a mat with its head facing north. The zhai lang poured wine, and the Taizhu received and offered it as an offering. The Taizhu held a tablet to the right of his seat and knelt to read the ritual text. In the Nuo ceremonies of various states and counties, eunuchs led them, searching through all rooms and alleys until completed; then eunuchs guided them out through the central gate, where responsible officials took over and led them outside, still proceeding with drumbeats and shouts beyond the main gates. They were divided into four groups, each heading toward one of the four city gates, stopping at the suburbs. Initially, when the Nuo participants entered, five Taizhu each led their attendants and brought wine and dried meat to present at the state gate and the four city gates; When the Nuo participants exited, they immediately poured wine and placed dried meat on the right side of each gate for a sacrificial offering to ward off misfortune; after making the ritual wishes, they buried the wine and food in the southwest. The wine was placed in jue (ritual cups), and the dried meat was arranged on bian (bamboo trays). The text read: "On the first day of the lunar month, in the year [name], the Son of Heaven dispatches Taizhu Minister [Name] to solemnly announce to the Taiyin deity: The dark winter has passed, and Qingyang governs the season. May the deity protect against misfortune and evil, ensuring no future hardships. We respectfully offer this pure wine as a tribute to the Taiyin deity; may it please accept." After finishing, they rose, placed the ritual tablet on the mat, then buried the sacrificial animal along with the wine in the pit. After completing this, they withdrew. The palace attendants led them out to outside Shuntian Gate and stopped there. In the Nuo rituals of states and counties, the ritual text read: "On the first day of a certain month in the year [name], I, Taizhu [Name], dare to solemnly announce to the deity Taiyin: As winter departs and summer returns, this is the normal cycle of yin and yang. May the deity shield us from all kinds of misfortune; we respectfully offer wine and dried meat as a sacrifice to the deity, may it please accept."
