26  | 余自香港以至倫敦，所觀博物院不下二十餘處，常有《詩經》所詠、《爾雅》所釋、《山經》所誌鳥獸草木之名，為近在中國所未見，及至外洋始見之者，頗足以資考證。惟獅子一物，中國詫為難得，而外洋處處有之。其形狀不過與虎相等，非若中國舊圖所繪之雄猛。蓋西人豢養獅子演戲為業者，常取初生之獅飼之，必養之三代而其性稍馴，然後可以演戲，可以鞭撻驅使；然皆其雌者耳，其色黃，其頭頂上無拳毛。若雄者，則頭項皆有拳手。波斯之種，有灰色，有青色，尤為威猛，殆非人間所能畜也。至若鹿之有麈也，狼之有狽也，牛之有犀兕也，魚之有鯨也、鱷也、飛也、比目也，鳥之有鷸也、鷂也、爰居也，獸之有狒狒也、猩猩也、玃父也，均於博物院始見之。此外，殊形異狀，不可殫述。即以犬論，已不下數十百種。惜外洋譯音詰屈，無從與古書印證。果使得暇，諦審其形聲，詳稽其種類，則《詩經》、《爾雅》、《山經》之名，當可十得五六。然余竊謂宇宙間之物，古無而今有者甚夥，即古有而今無者，當亦不尟也。 |
