善為士者不武,善戰者不怒,善勝敵者不爭,善用人者為之下。是謂不爭之德,是謂用人之力,是謂配天,古之極。

士,士師也。士師用兵,原是尚武。《易》曰:「剛中而應,行險而順,神武而不殺。」是用武而不武,士之善為士者。及大敵交鋒,兩軍對壘,不得不陳師鞠旅,稱干比戈,勢奔山河,聲震雷電。然究其心,士卒無多,而強敵忽然壓境,不難彈琴退中原之寇,和曲解敵國之圍。所謂不怒而成鐵鉞者是。迨至班師振旅,奏凱言旋,人皆盈廷奏績,而彼獨遜謝不前——所謂大樹將軍者,可以無愧矣。即或上賞頻加,而反窮常覺赧顏——此善勝敵者所由不爭也。《書》曰:「汝惟不爭,天下莫與汝爭能」,其斯之謂歟?若此者,皆由推陳布公,集思廣益,不自恃其才,善用眾人之才以為才;不自矜其智,善用眾人之智以為智。所謂卑以下人者,此也。倘非察納雅言,咨諏善道,虛懷若谷,謙尊而光。烏有此善戰善勝之能王天下猶反掌耶?是皆無爭之德,有以服民也。是皆用人之力有以威天下也。是皆下順民心,上合天道,有以服民心也。是皆用人之力有以威天下也。是皆下順民心,上合天道,與天地參而立萬古之人極也。噫,非聖人至誠盡性,焉能於干戈擾攘之際,隱然寓太平揖讓之風,用武不武,行怒不怒,相爭不爭如此乎?又況寬以御眾,慮以下人,賢者在位,能者在職,天下之士,皆效忠抒悃,而願赴功趨事,舍生奉命於其間如天道不言四時流行,萬物獻瑞,此所以配天地而立極也。《詩》曰:「思文后稷,克配彼天,莫匪爾極。」微斯人其誰與歸?

此言藥生進火,雖有猛烹急練功法,然亦因時為動,順勢而行,用武無武,所以無傾丹倒鼎之患也。縱氣機之動,真陽之生,至大至剛,充塞乎兩大,何異戰者之赫然震怒,所向披靡!況採取進火,只因其氣之浩然者擴充之,非好為強也。故一經洗練,而凡骨化為玉骨,凡身化作金身。所謂取金丹於反掌,猶取天下如拾芥也。惟其神凝無凝,息調無調,純任乎天,不雜以人。雖天人交爭,理欲迭起,不得不存理以遏欲,盡人而合天。迨至學粹功深,義精仁熟,毫無勝私克己、爭功爭能之心——仁者所以無敵於天下也。若是者,皆由謙和柔順,虛己下人,一聽氣機之動靜,而與為轉移。故丹之成也,有不見而章,不動而變,無為而成者焉。何殊善用人者為之下乎?修煉人道,果能在在安和,時時柔順,欲不用遏而自遏,理不用存而自存,是謂不爭之德也。且以不爭之心,順理以施,隨機而運,猶用人之力以成一己之功,是能範圍天地之化而不過也。孔子曰:「天何言哉,四時行焉,百物生焉。」聖人與道合真,正不啻天經地緯,而立萬世之人極也。
