釋道宣撰。道宣姓錢氏,丹徒人。隋末居終南白泉寺,又遷豐德寺淨業寺,至唐高宗時乃卒。持戒精苦,釋家謂之宣律師。《唐志》載《廣弘明集》三十卷,與此本合,然二十七卷以後每卷各分上下,實三十四卷也。其書續梁僧佑《弘明集》而體例小殊,分為十篇:一曰歸正,二曰辨惑,三曰佛德,四曰法義,五曰僧行,六曰慈濟,七曰戒功,八曰啟福,九曰悔罪,十曰統歸。每篇各為小序,大旨排斥道教,與僧佑書相同。其中如《魏書釋老志》本於二氏,神異各有紀錄,雖同為粉飾,而無所抑揚。道宣乃於敘釋氏者具載其全文,敘道家者潛刪其靈跡,然則冤親無等,猶為最初之佛法。迨其後世味漸深,勝負互軋,雖以叢林古德,人天瞻禮如道宣者,亦不免於門戶之見矣。其書採摭浩博,卷帙倍於僧佑,如梁簡文帝被幽述志詩及連珠三首之類,頗為泛濫。然道宣生隋、唐之間,古書多未散佚,故墜簡遺文,往往而在。如阮孝緒《七錄》序文及其門目部分,儒家久已失傳,《隋志》僅存其說,而此書第三卷內乃載其大綱,尚可推尋崖略。是亦禮失求野之一端,不可謂無裨考証也。《神僧傳》稱僧佑前身為南齊剡溪隱岳寺僧護,道宣前身即為僧佑。殆因道宣續僧佑之書,故附會是說。又稱道宣卒於乾封二年,而書末有游大慈恩寺詩,乃題高宗之謚,殊不可解。又注曰一作唐太宗,蓋知其抵牾,為之遷就。考《雍錄》載慈恩寺貞觀二十二年高宗在春宮時為文德皇后立,則太宗猶及見之。然大慈恩之名可以出高宗之口,不可以出太宗之口。殆原本題為御製,後人誤改歟?

釋道世撰。道世元惲,上都西明寺僧。是書成於高宗總章元年,朝散大夫蘭台侍郎隴西李儼為之序,稱事總百篇,勒成十帙。此本乃一百二十卷。蓋百篇乃其總綱,書中則約略篇頁而分卷帙,如千佛篇、十惡篇則一篇分七八卷,善友篇、惡友篇、擇交篇則兩三篇共一卷。故書凡一百一十八卷,而目錄二卷,亦入卷數,與陸德明經典釋文》例同,合之共為百二十也。每篇各有述意,如史傳之序。子目之首則或有述意,或無述意,為例不一。大旨以佛經故實分類編排纂,推明罪福之由,用生敬信之念。蓋佛法初興,惟明因果,暨達摩東邁,始啟禪宗。譬以《六經》之傳,則因果如漢儒之訓詁。雖專門授受,株守師承,而名物典故,悉求依據,其學核實而難誣。禪宗如宋儒之義理,雖覃思冥會,妙悟多方,而擬議揣摩,可以臆測,其說憑虛而易騁。故心印之教既行,天下咸避難趨易,辨才無礙,語錄日增,而腹笥三藏之學在釋家亦幾乎絕響矣。此書作於唐初,去古未遠,在彼法之中,猶為引經據典。雖其間荒唐悠謬之說,與儒理抵牾,而要與儒不相亂,存之可考釋氏之掌故。較後來侈談心性,彌近理,大亂真者,固尚有間矣。

釋智昇撰。智昇開元中居長安西崇福寺。是編以三藏經論編為目錄,不分門目,但以譯人時代為先後。起漢明帝永平十年丁卯,迄開元十八年庚午,凡六百六十四載。中間傳經緇素總一百七十六人,所出大小二乘、三藏聖教及聖賢集傳並及失譯總二千二百七十八部,合七千四十六卷,分為二錄。一曰總括群經錄。
