19  | 楚懷王秦楚之際，楚懷王以牧羊小兒，為項氏所立，首尾才三年。以事考之，東坡所謂天下之賢主也。項梁之死，王并呂臣、項羽軍，自將之，羽不敢爭。見宋義論兵事，即以為上將軍，而羽乃為次將。擇諸將入關，羽怨秦，奮勢願與沛公西，王以羽慓悍禍賊，不許，獨遣沛公，羽不敢違。及秦既亡，羽使人還報王，王曰：「如約。」令沛公王關中。此數者，智能自制命，非碌碌屠主受令於強臣者，故終不能全於項氏。然遣將救趙滅秦，至於有天下，皆出其手。太史公作《史記》，當為之立本紀，繼於秦後，迨其亡，則次以漢高祖可也。而乃立《項羽本紀》，義帝之事特附見焉，是直以羽為代秦也，其失多矣。高祖嘗下詔，以秦皇帝、楚隱王亡後，為置守泵，并及魏、齊、趙三王，而義帝乃高祖故君，獨缺不問，豈簡策脫佚乎？ |
