志學章最為難解,葢以夫子自述進德之序,而其語又為弟子所共聞,非揆之全經而無少刺謬,未可云得其立言之體也。竊以論語考之,夫子之自居者,曰忠信,曰好古敏求,曰學而不厭誨人不倦。聖與仁,則曰吾豈敢。行君子,猶曰未之有得。若斯之類,聞者以為聖人之謙德,而夫子則皆自道其實,豈至此章而立言遂有異乎?乃注家於不惑以後率多高遠之論,如知天命則曰知天命之終始,耳順則曰耳聞其言而知其微旨,朱注以天命為天道之流行,而賦於物者;以耳順為不思而得,以不踰矩為不勉而中,此其為說,孰謂不足以知聖人?而視夫子所以自居者,則大有徑庭矣。然則何說?曰:聖人之去學者,固未可以倍蓗論。然其所為之事,則一而已,禮樂仁義是也。始以之為志,而終身以之為矩,與學者無以異也。修身則道立,尊賢則不惑,立與不惑,學者之所可至也。知命而後可以為君子[命謂窮逹之分,見孔注],知言而後可以知人[此耳順正解],知命與耳順,亦學者之所可幾及也,不踰矩則敦乎仁之謂也。此數端下學,由是上達,由是配以歲月之先後,雖所進各有其序,要以明其自強不息之心,以見道之無窮,而學之不可以已也。登山而愈見天之高,涉海而愈見水之大,以聖人自謂已至於聖者固非,以聖人為有謙詞者,亦非也。故發憤忘食,樂以忘憂,不知老之將至,與此章並為聖人之實錄,而勉人之意見於言表。後儒以為但為學者立法,是聖人已自處於聖之極至矣。
