《臣道第五》
1  | 夫國之將興也，朝廷百吏，或短或長，或醜或美，或怡或厲，或是或非。雖聽其言，觀其貌，有似不同，然察其志、徵其心，盡於為國，所以剛訐不怨，黜退不愕，得其中無違乎理。故天不惑其時，墜不乏其利，人不亂其事，鬼神開贊，蠻夷柔同，保合太和，萬物化育。國之將亡也，朝廷百吏姿貌多美，顏色諧和，詞氣華柔，動止詳潤，雖觀其貌、聽其言，有若歡洽，然察其志、徵其心，盡在竟位。所以聞奇則怪，見異必愕，狙嫉相蒙，遂喪其道。故天告災時，墜生反物，人作凶德，鬼神間禍，戎狄交侵，喪亂弘多，萬物不化。夫不傷貨財、不妎人力、不損官吏而功成政立，下阜百姓，上滋主德，如此者忠賢之臣也。若費財煩人，危官茍效，一時功利，規賞於主，不顧過後貽災於國，如此者姦臣也。至理之世，官得人；不理之世，人得官。 |
