6  | 壬子冬到都，首謁雙江先生。先生問別來二十年做得甚麼功夫，餘對以二十年惟閉門讀書，雖二十一代全史亦皆涉獵兩遍。先生云：汝吳下士人，凡有資質者，皆把精神費在這個上。蓋先生方談心性而黜記誦之學故也。餘口雖不言，心甚不然之。蓋經術所以經世務，而諸史以載歷代行事之跡。故六經如醫家素難，而諸史則其藥案也。夫自三代而下以至於今，越歷既久，凡古人已行之事何所不有。若遇事變，取古人成跡斟酌損益，庶有依據。苟師心自用，縱養得虛靜，何能事事曲當哉？尋常應務猶可，至於典章儀式名物度數，其亦可以意見處之哉。故一經變故棼集，則茫無所措。遂至於率意定方，誤投藥劑，非但無救於病，其人遂成■〈疒兄〉痼矣。可無懼哉！ |
