韓退之謂《論語》「子在,回何敢死」,死本先字。僕觀《北史》李虎拜迎魏帝,帝曰:「朕以卿為死矣。」曰:「子在,回何敢死?乃知死字。劉原父謂《尚書》「願而恭」,恭疑泰字,蓋愿而加恭,則愈拘而不和矣,豈濟其不及哉?僕觀《南史》顧願字子恭,虞愿字士恭,則知恭字蓋古也。郭次象謂《孟子》「少則慕父母,知好色則慕少艾」,少當讀如多少之少,謂人既知好色,則慕父母之心少艾。艾言息也,如耆艾之艾。此說亦佳。然觀《離騷》「竦長劍兮擁幼艾」,《戰國策》「不以予工,乃與幼艾」,注引《孟子》「慕少艾」之語,又「齊王有七孺子」注云:孺子謂幼艾美女也。又知以少艾為幼美,自古已然矣。後世解經有極佳處,然觀史傳所引,又往往不然,似此甚多,不可殫舉。僕舊從老先生授《論語》「十室之邑,必有忠信如丘者焉,不如丘之好學也已」,謂孔子每事謙遜,不應自謂人不如我好學,只移焉字下一點於焉字上,以焉字作煙字讀,文意稹H還邸侗筆貳芬此語,則曰「如丘者焉」,因知後學之解聖經,正不必用意過當,為穿鑿之說,無悖於聖人經旨斯可矣。
