《卷一》
2  | 以海中荒島而置郡邑，實創所未有。其以台灣名者，襲乎舊，第未知昉自何時。或曰地在東隅，形似彎弓；或曰山橫海嶠，望之若台，民居廛市，又在沙曲水匯之處；地之得名以此。明末莆田周嬰東番記又稱臺員，未知何據。大抵閩音「灣」、「員」相近，故涉筆者亦因之混耳。愚謂島夷僻在窮海，鱗介與伍，書契茫昧，齦齶咿嚘，安得有地形字義可以徬佛？意明嘉、萬間，海寇奸民迭來竄踞，時因墟立市，即境呼名，差為近是。否則，音之不通，義於何取，臆度者毋乃詞費耶？ |
