雖然,試設身以處,處龜山之世,當重和之朝廷,而與當時在位之人相周旋,固有大難堪者。不知龜山之何以處此也?易於艮之三曰:「艮其限,列其夤,厲熏心。」曷厲乎?厲以其熏也。立孤陽於四陰之中,上無與應,熏之者莫非陰濁也,故危也。孔子之道大矣,非可凌躐而企及者。然而其出也,以衛靈公之荒淫,而固有蘧瑗、史魚在也。則立乎其廷,周回四顧,而可與為緣者不乏,則群小之熏,不能亂君子之臭味。故季斯、公山弗擾、佛肸皆可褰裳以涉;而女樂一歸,則疾舍宗國而不為忍。何也?姦邪者,君子之所可施其檠括;而同昏之朝,腥聞熺然,環至以相熏,則欲姑與之處,而無以自置其身。孔子且然,況不能為孔子者乎?龜山方出之時,何時邪?徽宗如彼矣,蔡京如彼矣,蔡攸、王黼、童貫、梁師成之徒又如彼矣。而一時人士相趨以成乎風尚者,章醮也,花鳥也,竹石也,鐘鼎也,圖畫也。清歌妙舞,狹邪冶遊,終日疲役而不知倦。觀乎靖康禍起,虜蹂都城,天子嗁號,萬民震慄,而抄剳金帛之役,洪芻、王及之輩,皆一時自標文雅之士,劫宮娥以並坐,歌謔酣飲,而不以死為憂。則當時豈復有姦邪哉?聚鳥獸於君門,相為蹢躅而已。龜山以嚴氣正性之儒者,孤立於其閑。槐棘之下,誰與語者?待漏之署,誰與立者?歲時往還之酬答,誰氏之門可以報謁?棘及膚,叢錐刺目,彼則無慚,而我能自適乎?莊生曰:「攖而後寧。」亦必有以寧也,亦必相攖而後相拒以寧也。不能攖我,而只以氣相熏染,厲而已矣,奚寧哉?念及此,則龜山之出,誠不如其弗出矣。
