南郭子綦隱机而坐,司馬云:「居南郭,因為號。」釋文:「隱,馮也。李本机作几。」案:事又見徐无鬼篇,「郭」作「伯」,「机」作「几」。仰天而噓,荅焉似喪其耦。向云:「噓,息也。」釋文:「荅,解體貌,本又作嗒。耦,本亦作偶。」兪云:「偶當讀為寓,寄也。即下文所謂『吾喪我』也。」案:徐无鬼篇「噓」下無此句。顏成子游立侍乎前,李云:「子綦弟子,姓顏名偃,謚成,字子游。」案:徐无鬼篇作「顏成子入見」。曰:「何居乎?徐无鬼篇作「夫子物之尤也」。形固可使如槁木,而心固可使如死灰乎?《文子·道原篇》引《老子》曰:「形若槁木,心若死灰。」〈徐无鬼篇〉與此二句同,「木」作「骸」。〈知北遊篇〉:「形若槁骸,心若死灰。」〈庚桑楚篇〉亦有二句,「槁骸」作「槁木之枝」。〈達生篇〉亦云:「吾執臂也,若槁木之枝。」是此「槁木」即槁木之枝。槁骸,亦槁枝也。以下異。今之隱机者,非昔之隱机者也。」子綦曰:「偃,不亦善乎而問之也!而同爾。今者吾喪我,汝知之乎?汝聞人籟而未聞地籟,汝聞地籟而未聞天籟夫!」郭云:「籟,簫也。」子游曰:「敢問其方。」成云:「方,術也。」子綦曰:「夫大塊噫氣,兪云:「塊,凷或體,大地。」成云:「噫而出氣。」其名為風。是唯無作,作則萬竅怒呺。而獨不聞之翏翏乎?之,猶其。下同。釋文:「翏翏,長風聲。李本作飂。」山林之畏佳,即崔,猶崔巍。大木百圍之竅穴,似鼻,似口,似耳,似枅,似圈,似臼,似洼者,似污者;字林云:「枅,柱上方木。」成云:「圈,獸之闌圈。」宣云:「洼,深池。污,窊也。三象身,三象物,二象地,皆狀木之竅形。」激者,謞者,叱者,吸者,叫者,譹者,者,咬者,宣云:「激如水激聲,謞如箭去聲;叱出而聲粗,吸入而聲細;叫高而聲揚,譹下而聲濁;深而聲留,咬鳴而聲淸。皆狀竅聲。」釋文:「謞音孝。司馬云:『譹,哭聲。』」案:「交交黃鳥」,三家詩作「咬咬」。前者唱于而隨者唱喁。李云:「于、喁,聲之相和。」成云:「皆風吹樹動,前後相隨之聲。」泠風則小和,飄風則大和,李云:「泠,小風也。」爾雅:「回風為飄。」和,胡臥反。厲風濟則衆竅為虛。向云:「厲,烈也。濟,止也。」風止則萬竅寂然。而獨不見之調調、之刁刁乎?」郭云:「調調、刁刁,皆動搖貌。」子游曰:「地籟則衆竅是已,人籟則比竹是已。以竹相比而吹之。敢問天籟。」子綦曰:「夫吹萬不同,而使其自已也,咸其自取,怒者其誰邪!」宣云:「待風鳴者地籟,而風之使竅自鳴者,即天籟也。引子綦言畢。」案:此文以吹引言。風所吹萬有不同,而使之鳴者,仍使其自止也。且每竅各成一聲,是鳴者仍皆其自取也。然則萬竅怒呺,有使之怒者,而怒者果誰邪!悟其為誰,則衆聲之鳴皆不能無所待而成形者,更可知矣,又何所謂得喪乎!「怒者其誰」,使人言下自領,下文所謂「眞君」也。
