1-卷十雜文十篇

26 信如所言,則山川社稷風雲雷雨皆有神乎?曰:無也。髙曾祖考皆有鬼乎?曰:無也。山川社稷風雲雷雨之神林林總總,皆敬而畏之,是山川社稷風雲雷雨之神,卽生於林林總總之心而巳。髙曾祖考之鬼,凢屬子孫亦無不愛而慕之,是髙曾祖考之鬼亦卽生於子孫之心而巳。曰:伊古以來,有親見山川社稷風雲雷雨之神者,又有親見髙曾祖考之鬼者,則奈何?曰:此或托其名以示神,假其號以求食,非真山川社稷之神、髙曾祖考之鬼也。何以言之?山川之神本無主名,若社稷之神則所謂句龍及後稷也,句龍為烈山氏之子,句龍倘有神,則應服烈山氏之衣冠;後稷者帝嚳之子也,稷倘有神,亦應服帝嚳時之衣冠。今童巫之見社稷之神者,言服飾一如祠廟中所塑唐宋衣冠之象,則必非句龍、后稷明矣。且山川社稷風雲雷雨有神,則天地益宜有神。吾聞輕清者為天,重濁者為地,未聞輕清之中更結為台殿宮觀及天神之形質也,重濁中更別具房廊舍宇及地祇之形質也。且天苟有神,則應肖天之圓以為形;地苟有神,則亦應規地之方以為狀。今世所傳天神地祇之形,則皆與人等,是則天地能造物之形,而轉不能自造其形。不能自造其形,乃至降而學人之形,有是理乎?推而言之,華山之形削成而四方,泰山之形岑崿而軒舉,使皆有神,則華山之神亦應肖削成四方之形、泰山之神應亦模岑崿軒舉之狀,皆不得學人之形以為形也。至於鬼之無,則又一言以蔽之曰:人而為鬼,則巳歸精氣於天、歸形質於地矣。歸於天者,複能使之麗於我乎?歸於地者,複能使之塊然獨立,一肖其生時乎?記有之:乎如有見,慨乎如有聞。又曰:臨之在上,質之在旁。為人子孫者不忍自死其髙曾祖考,則一念以為有,卽有矣。實則不然也。黎邱之鬼,慣效人子侄之狀;潁川之鬼,又慣仿人父祖之形。其實豈真子侄,豈真父神乎?則世之所言,見髙曾祖考之鬼,亦猶此矣。
