卷二十四

83 上以新译经五卷示宰相,因谓之曰:「浮屠氏之教有政治,达者自悟渊微,愚者妄生诬谤,朕于此道,微究宗旨。凡为君治人,即是修行之地,行一好事,天下获利,即释氏所谓利他者也。庶人无位,纵或修行自苦,不过独善一身。如梁武舍身为寺家奴,百官率钱收赎,又布发于地,令桑门践之,此真大惑,乃小乘偏见之甚,为后代笑。为君者抚育万类,皆如赤子,无偏无党,各得其所,岂非修行之道乎?虽方外之说,亦有可观者,卿等试读之,盖存其教,非溺于释氏也。」赵普曰:「陛下以尧、舜之道治世,以如来之行修心,圣智高远,动悟真理一七,固非臣下所及。」  上又谓宰相曰:「近者内外政事,渐成条贯,远近官吏,无不畏谨。朕思之,不觉自喜。日行好事,利益于人,便是修行之道。假如饭一僧、诵一经,有何功德,朕夙夜孜孜,固不为己,每焚香,惟愿民庶安辑,不近理之事,断不为也。大凡为君为臣,常宜兢畏,不可放逸。后唐庄宗夹河相持,千征万战,备尝艰苦,天下甫定,便恣溺惑,不及三年,果致倾覆,若此可为鉴戒。」宋琪曰:「陛下勤俭于己,励精政务,以百姓心为心,所谓『其身正,不令而行』也。」(焚香愿民安辑等语,别本在十一月乙丑,今从宝训,宜入此。)
