18  | 土司惟川、湖、雲、貴、兩廣有之，然止用於本省，若鄰省未嘗上中原一步也，亦流賊時徵入用之有功。嘉靖間，南倭、北虜無不資之，且倚為重如湖廣土兵。永順為上。其兵保靖，次之甚強。近嘗調三千人，後調六千，此在官之數也。實私加一倍，共一萬二千人。其陣法每司立二十四旗頭，每旗一人居前，其次三人，橫列為第二重，又其次五人，橫列為三重，又其次七人，橫列為第四重，又其次七人，橫列為五重，其餘皆置後歡呼助陣，如在前者，敗績則第二重，居中者進補。兩翼亦然。勝負以五重為限，若五重而皆敗，則餘無望矣。每旗一十六人，二十四旗共三百八十四人，皆精選之兵也。其調法，初檄所屬照丁揀選，宣慰籲天，祭以白牛、牛首，置兀上銀副之，下令曰：多士中有敢死衝鋒者，收此銀啖此牛勇者，報名匯而收之，更盟誓而食之，即各旗頭標下十六人是也。節制甚嚴，止許擊刺，不許割首，違者與退，縮者皆斬，故所戰有功。但沿途苦剽剠，因調來者，非止一枝有過，得相推委故也。其它若安若、岑若、奢大約相同，餘瑣瑣不足道。 |
