識字之法,須先習反切。蓋四方土音不同,其呼字亦異,故須本之中州,而中州之音,復以土音呼之,字仍不正,惟反切能該天下正音,只以類韻中同音第一字,切得不差,其下類從諸字,自無一字不正矣。至於字義,尤須考究,作曲者往往誤用,致為識者訕笑,如梁伯龍《浣紗記》金井水紅花曲「波冷濺芹芽,濕裙衩」,衩字法用平聲,然衩,箭袋也,若衣衩之衩屬去聲,唐李義山《無題》詩「八歲偷照鏡,長眉已能畫。十歲去踏青,芙蓉作裙衩」,足為明證。此其失亦自陳大聲散套節節高之「蓮舟戲女娃,露裙衩」始。然伯龍不獨《浣紗》,散套歸仙洞「荊棘抓裙衩」又爾。近日湯海若《還魂記》懶畫眉「睡荼蘼抓住裙釵線」,亦以衩字作平音,皆誤;僅陳玉陽《詅癡符記》玉胞肚曲「打球回,紛紛衩衣」獨是。又《浣紗》劉潑帽曲「娘行聰俊還嬌倩,勝江南萬馬千兵」,不知倩有二音,一雇倩之倩,作清字去聲讀,一音茜,即「巧笑倩兮」之倩,言美也。此曲字義,當作茜音,今卻押庚青韻中,即童習時《論語》亦不記憶,何淺至此!又車字之有二音也,蓋此字本音尺遮切,隸《正韻》十六遮類中,至漢以後始有作居字音者,《莊子》「惠施多方,其書五車」,此自當作尺遮切。《拜月》玉芙蓉曲「胸中書富五車,筆下句高千古」,此調法當兩句各押一韻,下曰「高千古」,則上作居音乃葉,而世無呼作「五車書」之理,今歌者皆從尺遮切,寧韻不葉,而不唱作居音,是歌者不誤,而作者誤也。嘆字之亦有二音也,一平聲作灘音,一去聲作炭音。《琵琶記》《赴選》折,末曰「仗劍對尊酒,恥為遊子顏,所志在功名,離別何足嘆」,此嘆字當作平音,與上顏字叶。後玉芙蓉曲「別離休歎」,此歎字當作去音,與下「輕拆散」之散字叶。今優人於何足歎之歎皆作去聲白,是作者不誤,而習者誤也。他若癭之音為穎,頸瘤也。鄭虛舟《玉玦記》「卻教愧殺癭瘤婦」,是認作平聲矣。又《莊子》「藐姑射山」之射音亦,「巾櫛」之櫛音卒,而汪南溟《高唐記》與雪、滅同押;至以纖、殲、鹽三字並押車遮韻中,是徽州土音也。又云「招魂未得,空歌楚[上此下夕]」,[上此下夕]字本宋玉《大招》,見《楚辭》,音蘇個切,作梭字去聲讀,惟些少之些,乃作平聲,今亦作平,以與車遮同押,何也?伯龍又以「盡道輕盈略作胖些」與「三尺小腳走如飛」同押,蓋認些字作西字音,又蘇州土音矣。至婦字,世皆作負字音,惟詩韻作阜字音,《玉玦》「癭瘤婦」、「秋胡婦」押在尤侯韻,音幾不可辨矣!又有舉世皆誤而為不可解之字,今列戲目而曰第一出、第二出,問何字,則曰折字,或曰悔字,問從何來,則默不能對也。蓋字書從無此字,惟近《詅癡符傳》言:牛食已,復出嚼,曰齝,音笞。傳寫者,誤台為句,以齝作出,遂終帙作第幾齝、第幾齝,殊不知齝原作[齒司],通作齝,以[齒司]作出,在屈筆毫釐之間,遂至轉展傳誤;然古劇亦絕無作第幾出者,只作第幾折可也。影響之誤如此,則作曲與唱曲者,可不以考文為首務耶?
