易》曰:原始反終,故知死生之說。蓋有生者必有死,而死於是者,未必不生於彼。通乎此,則唯予與彼知。而未嘗生,未嘗死也。方生方死,方死方生,則養形而悅生。今之所存,乃昔之所過者爾。故曰:此過養乎?此過歡乎?萬物以不同形相代,則死生之變不可勝計也。故曰:種有幾?如下文所云,乃耳目之所及者耳。若鼃為鶉者,蓋言萬物之化无川陸之間也,繼也,鼃蠙之衣、陵舄也,一種也。或得水土而生於下,或得陵屯而生於上,蓋言萬物之化隨形氣之所遇也。陵舄得鬱栖,而為鳥足。則假異物以為體,鳥足之根為躋蹧,其葉為胡蝶。則散同體以為物。胡蝶胥也。化而為蟲,生於竈下,其狀若脫,其名為●●掇。則飛者有化而為蠕動者矣。●●掇千日,化而為鳥,其名曰乾餘骨。則穴處者有化而為林棲者矣。或因形而移易,則斯彌而為頤輅。原黃軦之生乎腐蠸,與夫地皐、轉燐、野火之類是也。或因性而反復,則鷂之為鸇,鸇之為布穀,布穀之復為鷂是也。燕之為蛤,田鼠之為鶉,朽瓜之為魚,老韭之為莧,老羭之為猿,魚卵之為蟲,則或以類而相因,或以不類而相與為類。亶爰之獸自孕而生曰類,則无所感而化者?河澤之鳥視而生曰鶂,則無所交而化者也。純雌其名大腰,純雄其名穉蜂,則其在物也,有一陰陽而自生化者矣。思士不妻而感,思女不夫而孕,則其在人也,有非陰陽而能濳通者矣。以至后稷生乎巨跡,伊尹生乎空桑,雖不可致詰,而不足怪也。厥昭生乎濕,則化於氣。醯雞生乎酒,則化於味;羊奚比乎不筍,則化於習,久竹生青寧,則以无情而生有情也。青寧生程,則以无知而生有知也。《尸子》以程為豹之類,程生馬,則以同類而相生也。馬生人,則以非類而相生也。然則昆蟲之出入,草木之生死,變化无常,未始有極,又鳥知死生先後之所在哉?惟萬物生有所乎萌,死有所乎歸,聖人於此,知其有機緘而不能自己耳。
