開元初，邠王府僚吏有犯法者，上令左右求堪為王府長史者，太常卿姜皎薦乾曜公清有吏乾，因召見與語。乾曜神氣清爽，對答皆有倫序，上甚悅之，乃拜少府少監，兼邠王府長史。尋遷戶部侍郎、兼御史中丞。無幾，轉尚書左丞。四年冬，擢拜黃門侍郎、同紫微黃門平章事。旬日，與姚元之俱罷知政事。
