「何謂性?何謂命?」

曰:「性者,萬物一源;命者,己所自立。性非命弗彰,命非性弗靈。性命所主也,命性所乘也。今之論者,類以性命分宗,而不知道器相乘,有無相因,虛實相生,有不可歧而二者。故性則神也,命則精與氣也;性則無極也,命則太極也。可相離乎?或言釋氏了性,道家了命。非通論也。夫佛無我相,破貪著之見也;道言守母,貴無名之始也。不知性安知命耶?既知命矣,性可遺耶?故論性而不淪於空,命在其中矣;守母而複歸於樸,性在其中矣。是謂了命關於性地,是謂形神俱妙與道合真也」。

或問:「子之論性命則既明且盡矣。敢問性之在人,果何物也?可得而見乎?」

曰:「性不可見,所以見則性也,於不可見而欲求其所以見,則性愈遠矣。何耶?性之為物也,可以無心見,而不可以有心求。昔者老聖稱太樸以無名,黃帝索玄珠於罔象,古人之喻厥有深旨。請言人之所以生也!無極之真,二五之精,妙合而凝。所謂性即無極也,所謂命即二五之精也。二者妙合,而人始生焉。方其末生之前,則所謂無極者,混沌鴻蒙,何相何名?何音何緒?何臭何聲?及乎二五既凝,得一以靈,何思何為?何慮何營?是性之本體也,夫自情識開而本體鑿矣。張子曰:『形而後有氣質之性。善反之則天地之性存焉。』所謂情識,即氣質之性也。所捐本體,即天地之性也。者子曰:『復歸於朴,複歸於嬰兒,復歸於無極。』即善反也。故脩道之要,莫先於煉性。性定而氣質安不足以累之,則本體見矣。吾師之詩曰:『不迷性自住,性住氣自回。氣回丹自結,壺中配坎離。』是後天得先天而妙其用也。是之謂了命關於性也。」
