「神既養矣,安所事凝耶?」

曰:「凝神云者。無用用中之用,了命之學也。《參同契》曰:『經營養鄞鄂,凝神以成軀。』且夫離宮修定,禪之宗也;水府求玄,丹之旨也。澄神要矣,凝神急焉。《翠虛吟》云:『昔日逢師傳口訣,只要凝神入氣穴。』所謂氣穴,乃吾人之鄞鄂也。予前所著《神室論》中,則既明且盡矣。慮夫學者徒知澄神,而不知凝神之處,則漫無歸宿,而無以會夫歸根複命之原,徒知養神而不知有凝神之方,則茫無下手,而不能偵夫造化消息之妙,故述所聞,復著此論。蓋凝神者,入玄之要旨,丹家之第一義也。所謂凝者,非塊然不動之謂也。乃以神入於氣穴之中,與之相守而不離也。老子曰:『載營魄抱一,能無離乎?』夫氣穴者,乃吾人胎元受氣之初,所稟父母精氣而成者,即吾人各具之太極也。其名不一,曰氣海,曰關元,曰靈谷,曰下田,曰天根,曰命蒂,曰歸根竅、復命關,即一處也。方其處胎之時,呼吸之氣,與母相通。及夫子母分胎,剪落臍帶,則自安爐鼎,別立乾坤,而一呼—吸,常歸於本穴之中。蓋呼吸者,吾人立命之本也。一息之間,呼吸不至,則氣絕而死矣。呼則氣闢,陽之舒也;吸則氣闔,陰之斂也。一呼一吸,名曰一息。診家以之候氣,良有旨也。《莊子》曰:『眾人之息以喉,真人之息以踵。』以踵者,謂深入於穴也。眾人之息,非不以踵也,但神有不存,縱其出入焉,而不自覺,若以喉耳。真人則神依於息,而深入於本穴之中,綿綿若存,無少間斷,故得專氣致柔,抱—無離,虛極靜篤,而能觀其復也。所謂依者,又非逐於息而依之也,有勿忘勿助之義焉。故神依於息則凝,神凝則氣亦凝;神依於息則和,神和則氣亦和,相須之道也。凝神之法,自調息始。調息者,依息之謂也。」
