老子書,註者無慮數十家,獨河上公最著,然莫古於嚴君平矣。君平生元成間,與揚子雲同時,葢於卜筮,其術道髙藐,才智淵蔚,辨討微邃,持論悠暢,幾識洞變,藏往知來,與鬼神謀,隂陽為使。其為㫖與老氏無間。故因其篇章以發歸趣以為道,夲於無,無無之無,是生於無;未始之始,是為太始。體既無矣,不得不虛。既未有始,莫之端倪,惟無倪也。故能周遍,虛之極也,復何所窮?故原物之生,始惟至柔。柔者生之端,剛者生之魄也。勢之充滿,必始於虛,柔為之夲,不失其初。故天道下降,地道居卑,川沖谷虛,澤納藪萃。王公執謙,能下為貴,以卑為髙,以後為先,去泰去矜,知雄守雌。以是為國,以是為身,禍之所去,福之所存。綿綿不絶,為天下正。重積蚤復,惟怳與惚,為於無為,事於無事。故天地遂成,萬物兼作,長養一世,含利四海,無舉大功而名號歸之,無傷吾神而萬世為澤。此君平之指,而老氏之大要也。人隨所慕以自為說,故有以柔弱勝剛強,而為兵權之譎者,取彼險武附於詐謀。有以芻狗萬物而為申韓之刻者,絶聖去智以愚齊民。有以清净無為而為葢公之言者,慎守其常用以寧一,則曹丞相輔漢,一代之治是也。有以谷神不死而為神仙長年之術者,則推夲柱下,原於道德關尹書之類,遂為玄談之宗。然其所述。皆老之支流,非其全體。老氏豈虞其至是哉!即六藝,固有盜以為亂階者。莊叟固云古之博大真人哉,而自著其道,未嘗附之。今欲與列荘為一顧且未可,而況彼諸家者自為解也?毫𨤲千里,而何以訓詁為哉!抑君平之書,則大有類司馬季主者矣!葢皆懐道不仕,敦賁丘園,上述天道,下紀地理,中極人事,究觀邃古,覽窮後世,旁盡物情,包洞幽晦,䜟記未形,與能凡庶。故宋忠賈𧨏聞其言也,抑心消志伏軾無氣。而嚴夫子端策正蓍,抗論卜肆,巨君之亂,貞不絶俗,清而不汙。其為文也,宏𥙿淹該,含通標貫,靡靡纚纚,條縷判析,首尾溫粹,即之也近,充類也逺,不以才雄而鬱耀莫遏,不以辭貴理勝;故超若千里驥,盤旋垤中,塵不出軌,馭不逸範,而踐無遺地,騁有餘巧;若江海為物,淹浸蕩沃,滔陵汨陳,漸潤而不知其益;若造化付形,隨所充具,其新不窮,而機不可測。雖以釋訓為名,故自為一家言。其逸亡者已,六卷即所存,可以無恨其少矣。劉鳯序
