1 孔子称「善人不践」,孟子谓「君子欲其自得」,《系辞》云「天下同归而殊涂,一致而百虑」。此三言者,千古道学之指南也。夫道无定体,学无定法,见每歧于仁智,克互用乎刚柔,钧是问仁,而克复敬恕工夫顿渐,同此一贯,而忠恕学识义别知行,各得其性之所近而已。宋儒濂溪、明道之深纯与颜子为近,伊川、横渠之笃实与曾、思为近,象山之高明与孟子为近。立言垂教,不必尽同,后人泥于著述之,佥谓朱子集群儒之大成,数百年来专主一家之学。
2 明初,天台、渑池椎轮伊始,河东、崇仁风教渐广,大抵恪守紫阳家法,言规行矩,不愧游、夏之徒,专尚修,不尚悟,专谈下学,不及上达也。至白沙静养端倪,始自开门户,远希曾点,近类尧夫,犹是孔门别派。自阳明倡良知之说,即心是理,即知是行,即工夫是本体,直探圣学本原。前此诸儒,学朱而才不逮朱,终不出其范围;阳明似陆而才高于陆,故可与紫阳并立。当时若东廓主戒惧,双江主归寂,念菴主无欲,最称新建功臣。即甘泉体认,见罗止修,亦足互相表里。迨蕺山提清诚意,约归慎独,而良知之学,益臻实地,不落虚空矣。
3 黄黎洲先生《明儒学案》一书,言行并载,支派各分,择精语详,钩玄提要,一代学术源流,暸如指掌。要其微意,实以大宗属姚江,而以崇仁为启明,蕺山为后劲。凡宗姚江与辟姚江者,是非互见,得失两存,所以阐良知之秘而防其流弊,用意至深远也。
4 是书清河贾氏刻本行世已久,但原本首康斋,贾本改而首敬轩,原本「王门学案」,贾本皆改为「相传学案」,与万五河原刻不同,似非先生本旨。予家旧有钞本,谨据万氏原刻重加订正,以复其初,并校亥豕之讹,寿诸梨枣。窃谓学贵真修实悟,不外虚实两机,病实者救之以虚,病虚者救之以实。古人因病立方,原无成局,通其变,使人不倦,故教法日新,理虽一而言不得不殊,入手虽殊,而要归未尝不一。读是书者,诚能不泥其,务求自得之真,向身心性命上作印证,不向语言文字上生葛藤,则东西相反而不可相无,百川学海而皆可至于海。由诸儒上溯濂、洛、关、闽,以寻源洙、泗,庶不负先生提倡之苦心也夫!
