初，粵西歲饑多盜，湖南雷再浩、新寧李沅發復竄入為亂。粵盜張家福等各率黨數千，四出俘劫。秀全乘之，與楊秀清創立保良攻匪會，練兵籌餉，歸附者益眾。桂平知縣誘而執之，搜獲入教名冊十七本；巡撫鄭祖琛不能決，遂釋之。秀全既出獄，秀清率眾迎歸，招集亡命，貴縣秦日綱、林鳳祥，揭陽海盜羅大綱，衡山洪大全皆來附，有眾萬人。馮雲山讀書多智計，為部署隊伍、攻守方略。以歲值丁未，應「紅羊」之讖，遂乘勢倡亂於金田。褫鄭祖琛職，起前雲貴總督林則徐為欽差大臣往督師。則徐薨於途，以兩廣總督李星沅代之，赴廣西剿寇。寇竄平南恩旺墟，副將李殿元擊卻之，復回撲，巡檢張鏞不屈死；仍遁金田，星沅檄清江協副將伊克坦布往攻，被圍陣亡。星沅檄鎮遠總兵周鳳岐往援，戰一晝夜，斃寇數百，圍始解。上以寇勢日熾，命前漕運總督周天爵署廣西巡撫，乃請提督向榮專剿金田。
