Daiyu said, "We study, write calligraphy, compose poetry, and in our spare time we do some needlework." "Grandma was the happiest. She often drank wine and admired flowers in the garden, making it very lively." |

"Seeing them with their parents, brothers and sisters, I would often feel sad and shed tears. This constant weeping eventually harmed my health, leading to frequent illness. Thus, my body became frail and weak, enduring this for many years until now, it has become incurable." Jia Lady asked, "What exactly was your illness? How long did you suffer before passing away?" Daiyu said, "I was ill for only a few days." Lady Jia asked, "How did it start?" "Tell me what happened." Daiyu said, "One day I was going to the main house. As I walked through the garden, halfway along the path I heard a maid weeping." I asked him why he was crying. He said, "Miss Lin, let me tell you and have you judge this fairly." "It is because Baoye Er has been ill and delirious, never really recovering. They say that in the next few days they are going to bring over Bao Nü to marry him as a way of bringing good fortune." My sister asked me, "Tomorrow when she is brought over, will we call her Bao Nü or Baoye Er's Second Madam?" This sentence did not say anything wrong, but my sister slapped me across the face. "Don't you think it's terribly unfair?" I asked her why she hit me. She said, "Second Madam Lian gave such orders; no one is allowed to speak carelessly." This matter was originally kept secret, and the people in the garden and those at Xiaoxiang Pavilion were not informed. Didn't you hear?" "They are talking and asking questions recklessly here." "Did I say who told me?" "My sister was still going to hit me, so I came here to cry." As she spoke, the maid continued to weep there. Hearing these words, I was surprised and went to the main house. There I saw Brother Baoyu laughing foolishly; Grandma, Auntie, sisters, and my aunts were all absent from there. I only sat for a while when the people in those rooms hurriedly urged me to return. No sooner had I returned to my room than suddenly a wave of panic swept over me, and dizziness struck. Blood gushed from my mouth, nearly causing me to collapse. Zijuan and others hurriedly supported me onto the kang bed. From then on, I could not stop vomiting blood; no medicine or treatment was effective, and after enduring for two or three days, I died." "Second niece-in-law Feng Yaotou is a cunning, sharp, and very domineering person. She saw that you are more intelligent and refined than she is, and also well-versed in literature; fearing that if you were to marry Baoyu in the future, you would take away her authority over household affairs, she used flattery and deceitful words to persuade Grandma and Second Sister Lian to bring Bao Yaotou from her own family into the marriage with Baoyu. This way, they forcibly broke up your lifelong prospects and led to your tragic death." She then gritted her teeth and said to Lin Gong, "Sir, you must think of a way to bring this wench Feng Yaotou here and make her suffer terribly, so we can vent our anger; only then will we be satisfied." Lin Gong said, "The life and death of every person is determined by fate. If her time has not yet come to an end, how could we possibly bring her here?" "Don't worry. Her soul has already returned to Suzhou, where it reunites with her parents." She immediately gave orders to a fairy, saying, "You must quickly descend into the mortal world and lead his soul here." "Do not delay for even a moment." The two fairies accepted the order, leapt onto clouds of light, and in a moment had already arrived at Lin's residence in Suzhou. They saw Lin Gong and others, then said to them, "We have been ordered by Jinghuan Xiangu to come and welcome your beloved daughter, Miss Lin. Please return quickly with us to Taixu Huanjing to register and cancel her records, after which she will immediately return to the mortal world." "The Immortal Lady has given strict instructions: Do not delay for even a moment. It is urgent, very urgent." |

Let me give up myself and stay here forever to serve you both, my beloved parents." While speaking, she wept so bitterly that it was heart-wrenching to hear. Lin Gong and his wife were dazed and depressed, also crying uncontrollably in grief. The two fairies wept as well. Lin Gong said, "My child!" "This is what was destined in your life; how could I possibly go against Heaven's will?" "Moreover, by returning to the mortal world after this journey, you can fulfill your long-standing wishes; it is precisely a time when bitterness turns into sweetness. How could you possibly not go?" Daiyu said, "My daughter would rather live in the netherworld than suffer loneliness and hardship as an orphan at my mother-in-law's house." Daiyu, while clutching her parents' sleeves and weeping bitterly, added, "I have only just returned to you; how could I bear to defy my dear parents once more and go back to that place which has brought me so much suffering?" Lady Jia said, "Listen to me: Suppose your yang shou has not yet ended; at this moment, my husband and I still cannot see you." "You would remain there in a half-dead, half-alive state, unable to fulfill your wishes, and just watch others' happiness." "How could that be an easy life? What else can you do?" "If you take a step back and think about it, you will understand." Lin Gong said, "Do you remember the year we sent you to Beijing? You were reluctant to leave. Naturally, we had to harden our hearts and go." Moreover, the prospects after this journey will only get better and better. "My child, go soon." Daiyu tightly clung to her parents, unwilling to let go at all, weeping as if in a daze or delirium. The two fairies said, "Miss, please come to the Illusory Realm and see the Immortal Lady." There you will find the Shuo Di Fa (land-contracting method), Fan Hun Xiang (soul-returning fragrance), and Huai Meng Cao (dream-holding herb). "If you wish to see your loved ones, Miss, by using the Shuo Di Fa, you can summon them for spiritual reunions and meet with them often. Isn't that better?" After hearing this, Daiyu said, "If it can truly be like this, then I will feel at ease." The fairies urged her to rise once more. With no choice, Daiyu swallowed her sobs and tears, bowed farewell to her parents with a heavy heart. The two fairies supported Daiyu to the central courtyard; as the fairy's hand swept through, she was instantly lifted into the air and flew away. Lin Gong and Lady Jia looked up in admiration, shedding a few more tears before finally stopping. |

White stones and green moss, untouched by the slightest dust; rare flowers and precious herbs exuding a fragrant mist that lingers. In her heart she was astonished: "Indeed, this is an extraordinary fairyland." When they reached the archway, Daiyu looked up and saw a plaque above it that read: |

| 33 | 黛玉看了，心中惕然，默會匾對的意旨，竟是成就自己的原故。天地恩厚如此，可謂大造化了。跟隨仙女進了宮門，繞過配殿，行至正中，遇著仙姑迎來，攜了黛玉進去，說道：「妹妹闊別了。」黛玉道：「弟子久謫人間，今日幸睹仙顏，頓舒夙念。」隨即深深下拜。仙姑挽住，讓黛玉坐下。仙姑道：「賢妹塵寰歷劫十餘年，春悵秋悲，淚盡羅巾，自憐幽獨，身居錦繡之叢，命等飄零之葉。臨風感嘆，對影欷戰。我為你躊躇熟矣。」黛玉道：「弟子沉淪淒楚，仰沐垂憐，中心快伙。」仙姑道：「今日引妹妹歸來，一結前因，再成後果。我合你各處領略一番。」說畢，同黛玉到多情司、薄命司、墮淚司、斷腸司、銷魂司、顧影司、悵望司、凝想司、感月司、惜花司、悲風司、怨雨司等處，一一細看。又將十二釵正冊、副冊、又副冊與看，黛玉穎悟非常，默識一遍，即已了然。又到殿後，見一門上懸著「絳珠仙闕」匾額，進去，則見白玉花欄圍著那株仙草，指與黛玉道：「看你這草，光華耀目，香氣沁心，欣欣向榮，正寓賢妹嘉祥之瑞。」又引至前後左右逛了一回，仍到原處，叫眾仙女相見畢，入座擺上酒肴，無非蓬島奇鮮，仙源玉醴，不必多贅。比將前後曲譜與黛玉對看，令眾仙女將前次演與寶玉聽的曲子一一歌完，又將新翻改換的數曲再復歌一遍。 Daiyu looked at the plaque and couplet, her heart suddenly stirred with a sense of awe. She silently understood their meaning—it was all about fulfilling her own destiny. The kindness of Heaven and Earth is so profound; it can truly be called great transformation. Following the fairies into the palace gate, they passed by the side halls and arrived at the central hall. There, they met Xiangu greeting them warmly; she took Daiyu's hand and led her in, saying, "Dear sister, it has been a long time." Daiyu replied, "Disciple has been exiled to the mortal world for a long time. Today I am fortunate enough to behold your divine countenance and my long-held thoughts are finally eased." She immediately bowed deeply in reverence. Xiangu gently held her back, helped Daiyu sit down, and invited her to take a seat. Xiangu said, "Dear sister, you have undergone more than ten years of trials in the mortal world. You have known spring melancholy and autumn sorrow; your tears soaked through silk handkerchiefs. Feeling lonely and pitiful, though living among splendor, your fate has been as fragile as a drifting leaf." You sighed in the wind, wept before your own reflection. "I have pondered over you thoroughly." Daiyu said, "Disciple has endured sorrow and hardship in the mortal world; I am deeply grateful for your compassion. My heart is filled with joy." Xiangu said, "Today I have brought you back to settle the causes of your past and shape the results of your future. I will take you through various places so that we may each experience them thoroughly." After saying this, Xiangu took Daiyu to various offices: the Bureau of Passionate Feelings, the Bureau of Short-Lived Fate, the Bureau of Falling Tears, the Bureau of Heartbreak, the Bureau of Soul-Devastation, the Bureau of Self-Reflection, the Bureau of Longing Gaze, the Bureau of Fixed Thought, the Bureau of Moon-Melancholy, the Bureau of Flower-Pity, the Bureau of Wind-Sorrow, and the Bureau of Rain-Grief. They visited each one carefully and examined them in detail. She also showed Daiyu the main register, the secondary register, and the tertiary register of the Twelve Gold Locks. Daiyu was exceptionally perceptive; after silently reviewing them once, she already understood everything clearly. They then went to the back of the hall and saw a gate with a plaque hanging above it that read "Jiangzhu Xianque." Entering, they found a white jade flower railing surrounding a divine herb. Xiangu pointed at it and said to Daiyu, "Look at this plant—its brilliance dazzles the eyes, its fragrance refreshes the heart, and it thrives with vitality; it symbolizes your sister's auspicious fortune and virtue." Xiangu then led her to tour the front, back, left, and right sides for a while. Eventually they returned to their original place, where all the fairies gathered to meet Daiyu. They took their seats as wine and delicacies were served—nothing but rare treasures from the Immortal Isles and nectar from divine springs; there was no need to describe them in detail. Then, the musical scores from before and after were brought out for Daiyu to review. The fairies sang all the songs they had performed for Baoyu previously, one by one; then they also re-sang several newly revised pieces once more. |

Ten years of karmic obstacles are now completely dispelled. They have broken through the trials between life and death, transcending the entanglements of grudges and karmic suffering. Only then can one deserve a night of love beneath golden canopies lit by the moon, and spring breezes caressing jade-like screens with peacocks in flight. This is because of her own chaste virtue and sincere good deeds. One must know that fortune, misfortune, longevity, or early death are all determined by Heaven; however, the resolve to cultivate oneself and improve lies in one's own hands. Behold this day of joyous union beneath a shared bough, where happiness and springtime last forever together. |

Suddenly, the precious treasure of Miaocheng was unjustly seized by a tyrant; fortunately, divine spirits protected and rescued her. She emerged from the mire, left to depend on others for shelter. Happy reunion with a devoted and affectionate gentleman who has long been concerned about her. This is indeed: entrusted to the hands of a skilled artisan, refined through careful carving, and thus ranked among jade treasures. |

How could they wither and return to nothingness? Alas, it is the hatred of jealous orioles and swallows, and even more unbearable, the gnawing by stubborn insects. Feeling the decay and transformation of things, seeking beauty but finding no trace. Fortunately, with spring returning on foot to restore life, fragrant petals meet again beneath the moonlight. On this day, the affectionate young gentleman reflects on past and present, silently cherishing her graceful visage in his heart. At the time of joyous reunion, simply take hold of the spiritual root to revive and flourish together once more. Even if they are silent peach and plum trees, they still smile in the spring breeze just the same. |
| 38 | ［煞尾］色本空中現，空明色更多。漫說道，寂靜虛無乾淨也，轉幻出空中樓閣勢巍峨。又只見，錦繡繁華地，溫柔安樂窩。都只為，人情缺陷長為恨，因此上、補出這玉潤珠圓一曲歌。 [Shawei] Color itself appears from emptiness; the more empty it is, the more color there will be. Do not say that in silence and emptiness all is clean; from this void arise magnificent towers as if conjured from the air. Yet one also sees a land of brocade and splendor, a warm and peaceful nest of comfort and ease. All this is but to mend the long-standing regrets caused by human imperfections, hence composing this song of jade-like smoothness and pearl-like perfection. |
| 39 | 黛玉聽完，心中默會。此番黛玉魂游景況，與寶玉神遊大同小異。黛玉心想：「原來真有此事。從前寶玉對我說過，曾夢到此處，如何飲酒聽歌。我還半信半疑。今日身歷此境，足見寶玉真不欺我。」仙姑道：「曲中意旨，賢妹參詳。我已托渺渺真人帶你下界還魂，畢你同神瑛侍者三生之願。今贈你通靈符訣錦囊，付真人替你帶去，內貯返魂香、懷夢草，用時佩在身上，升天入地，與鬼神相見，無所不通。待你綠滿歸真，再合你共賞仙眾韶景。 After hearing it all, Daiyu silently understood in her heart. This time, the scene through which Daiyu's soul wandered was largely similar to Baoyu's spiritual journey, with only minor differences. Daiyu thought to herself: "It seems this is truly the case." Baoyu once told me that he had dreamed of coming here, how we would drink wine and listen to songs. I was half-believing and half-doubting at the time. Now that I have personally experienced this place, it is clear that Baoyu did not deceive me." The Fairy said: "My dear sister, ponder the meaning and intent of this song. I have already entrusted Miaomiao Zhenren to bring you back to the mortal world and restore your soul, so that you may fulfill the three-life wish between you and Shenying Shizhe. Today, I bestow upon you a talisman and secret instructions in a silk pouch. Entrust it to Zhenren for delivery to you; inside are stored the fragrant powder of soul-returning and dream-holding grass. When used, wear it on your body, and you will be able to ascend to heaven or descend into the earth, meeting ghosts and gods without any hindrance. When you have fully returned to your true nature, we shall then reunite for a shared appreciation of the divine and beautiful scenery. |
| 40 | 黛玉正在留戀，只見渺渺真人到來，向仙姑稽首道：「我今引絳珠仙回陽，茫茫大士已指撥神瑛侍者去了。」說畢，仙姑同黛玉行至牌坊，又叮嚀道：「賢妹歷視諸冊，此乃天機，切勿漏洩。」黛玉連連答應。只見真人將袍袖一拂，起朵艷云，托著黛玉魂靈，飄然而返。欲知怎樣回陽，下回分解。 While Daiyu was still reluctant to part, she suddenly saw Miaomiao Zhenren arrive and bow respectfully before the Fairy, saying: "I am here now to lead Hongzhu Xian back to the world of the living. The Venerable Mangmang has already guided Shenying Shizhe away." After saying this, the Fairy and Daiyu walked together to the archway. The Fairy gave further instructions: "Dear sister, you have seen all these records; they are heavenly secrets. Under no circumstances should you reveal them." Daiyu nodded repeatedly in agreement. Just then, Zhenren swept his robe sleeve and conjured up a brilliant cloud that carried Daiyu's soul spirit back in a graceful and ethereal manner.
