《序》
1  | 安南与暹罗，地相近也，风土相似也，疆域、人口相若也，而安南削弱，为佛人所制；暹罗则物饶政举，颇致富庶。论者求其故，不得，乃曰：「安南用汉字，通观宇内，凡用汉字之邦，委靡不振。」呜呼！果如其言，则印度旣兦，暹罗何以用其字？罗马旣亡，欧、米各国何以用其字？盖尝考之，国势之振不振，在乎自强与倚人。自强者，畜财鍊兵，事主实效；倚人者，籍力大国，务张虚威。安南，古称交趾，建国尤旧。而两汉以还，入贡受册封，袭为恒例。近世佛人通商设埔头，一旦开衅，逐清国戍兵，一战克东京，再战取谅山。王位废置，权在其手，外援之不可恃如此。昔者，我幕府与安南、暹罗书聘往来，商民移住暹罗者，渐成聚落，号曰日本街。有山田长政者焉，智略过人，及暹罗被寇请援，率我众力战立功，遂据其地。当是时，彼固不用汉字，而削弱甚于安南。何哉？亦恃外援，不能自强也。 |
