欧阳文忠公撰《四库书目》,言《孙子》注二十馀家。予所见仅此:汉有曹操,唐有杜牧、李筌、陈皥、孟氏、贾林、杜佑,宋有张预、梅尧臣、王晢、何氏,诸家多托之空言,而曺操则见之行事者也。操甞创为《新书》,诸将征伐,即以《新书》授之。从者胜,违者负。今《新书》不传,而见于《李肃公问答》者,机权应变,寔本之《孙子》。其注多隐辞,引而不彂,操之所以如鬼也。杜牧自序云:「孙武死后凡千岁,将兵者有成有败,勘其事迹,皆与武所著书一一相拞当,犹印圈模刻,一不差跌。予觧犹盘中走丸,横斜曲直,计于临时,不可尽知。其必可知者,知丸之不能出于盘也。」牧未甞用兵。观其与时宰论兵二书,谓尚古兵柄本出儒术,援古证今,若绳裁刀,觧使其言用,山东不足平矣。陈皥注多指謪杜之谬误,人各有见,未必为樊川病也。李筌注依《太乙遁甲》,杂引诸史,以证《太乙遁甲》,与今所存书往往不同意。古书散逸久矣。孟氏、贾林、杜佑,即唐纪爕所集者。岐公相业足称,而文章议论亦炳焕杰出,其注即里居时撰,见《通典》。张预承历代名将,用兵制胜有合孙子者,编次为传,孙子多所发眀。梅尭臣注,文忠公谓其当与三家并传,晦翁有定论矣。孟氏、贾林、王晢、何氏,虽言人人殊,而皆观者有所禆益。此注之所以集也。

夫兵,凶器也,不得已而用之者也。然不素习承平之时,而姑试于有事之日,吾不知其可也。故生而悬弧,长而习射,冬而讲武,凡人之所当知者也。诗云:「文武吉甫,万邦为宪。」孔子曰:「有文事者必有武备」,又曰:「戚战则克」。圣人之所以敎者也。馀夙有四方之志,每渉猎群书而尤嗜《孙子》。《孙子》上谋而后攻,修道而保法,论将则曰仁智信勇严,与孔子合。至战守攻围之道,批抗捣虚之术,山林险阻之势,料敌用间之谋,靡不毕具。其它韬钤机略,孰能过之。然其言约而该,近而逺,未易窥测。今观诸家所注,或本隐以之显,或由粗而识精,或援史而证之以事,或因言而实之以人,是《孙子》之微词奥义,彰彰眀矣。故曰《孙子》十三篇,不惟武人根本,又士亦当尽心焉旨哉!言乎予奉
