| 26 | 因此上先自觀心一回，將心地上打掃得潔潔淨淨，徐徐地再運氣往來。這第二關就輕輕過了，差不多第三關也就有些意思起來，心裡十分舒暢。不說黛玉、寶玉兩下裏雲泥各別，苦樂不同。且說姜景華、林良玉、賈蘭努力功名，又有曹雪芹、白魯切磋之益，漸漸的殿試朝考已畢，而且引見過了，一甲一名狀元便是姜景星，一甲三名探花便是林良玉，賈蘭也用了庶吉士，說不盡兩邊府裏的合家歡喜，也各受賀答謝，喧天似的煩過了好些時兒。這姜景星授職修撰以後，就托曹、白二位向林良玉去求黛玉的親事。曹雪芹因與寶玉至交，素常來無言不盡，知他的隱情便不肯作伐。那白魯是南方來的哪裏知道，就替他轉致了良玉。良玉本來心頭拿定了將黛玉許配景星，又是個狀元花燭，就密友上做個至親也稱了心，也對得過父母，便一口應承。只等回過了賈政出帖，即便過來告訴賈政，說等舅舅知道了，再告訴南安郡王。這賈政聽見就十分的為難了，逐層想起來，一句通駮回不出。一則林如海夫婦雙亡，原憑良玉做主；二則南安郡王也要掌些主見；三則寶玉已經娶過，姜景星又是結髮姻緣，再則俗見上簇新的狀元；四則與良玉同學同年自幼交好；五則這麼樣也對得過如海夫婦，真個沒的駁回他。末後一轉念間想出一個主意來，想著外甥女兒從小與寶玉過得好，雖沒有什麼別的，看他們過去的這些情節也分拆不開，不如叫良玉問她，她若真個肯，也沒法了。難道果真的黛玉定了別的親，寶玉就活不成了？便沉呤了一會，說道：「這姜殿撰呢，原好，但則外甥女兒的性情你也知道，雖則女孩兒跟前不便明說，也要影影的討箇信兒。我們再定見。」 Therefore, she first took a moment to observe her own mind and carefully cleared away all impurities from her heart. Thus, the second channel passed easily, and almost immediately there was a sense of progress toward the third one as well; her heart felt extremely at ease. Meanwhile, Jiang Jinghua, Lin Liangyu, and Jia Lan worked diligently toward official success. With the added benefit of discussions with Cao Xueqin and Bai Lu, they gradually completed their palace examination and court tests, as well as their audience before the emperor. The top first-place laureate in the jinshi class was Jiang Jingxing; the third-place laureate, or tanshua, was Lin Liangyu; Jia Lan also became a shujishi (a junior official). It is impossible to describe how delighted both families were—each household received congratulations and offered thanks, and for quite some time there had been great celebrations echoing through the air. After Jiang Jingxing was appointed as a xiu zhen (a compiler in the Hanlin Academy), he entrusted Cao Xueqin and Mr. Bai to approach Lin Liangyu regarding the matter of marrying Daiyu. Cao Xueqin, being a close friend of Baoyu and always speaking openly with him, knew about his hidden feelings and thus refused to act as an intermediary. As for Bai Lu, who had come from the south and did not know these details, he went ahead and passed along the request to Lin Liangyu. Lin Liangyu had already made up his mind to betroth Daiyu to Jiang Jingxing, especially since he was a zhuangyuan (top jinshi) and would bring honor with his wedding. Even as the closest of friends, this union would satisfy both Lin's heart and his parents' expectations, so he readily agreed. He only needed to inform Jia Zheng and issue the formal invitation. As soon as he returned, he would tell Jia Zheng that once his uncle (Jia Zheng) was informed, they would then notify Duke Nan'an of Anzhou. Upon hearing this, Jia Zheng felt extremely troubled. Thinking it through layer by layer, he rejected the proposal outright without a single word of approval. First, Lin Ruhai's wife and husband had both passed away; originally, it was up to Lin Liangyu to decide. Second, Duke Nan'an of Anzhou also needed to have a say in the matter. Third, Baoyu had already been married, while Jiang Jingxing had an established marital bond as well, not to mention that he was now a newly crowned zhuangyuan, which would be impressive by conventional standards. Fourth, Lin Liangyu and Jiang Jingxing were childhood friends who had studied together since their youth. Fifth, such an arrangement would truly honor the memory of Lin Ruhai and his wife—there really was no reason to reject it. In the end, a thought suddenly occurred to him. He recalled that his niece had been close with Baoyu since childhood; although there was no formal engagement or anything else, considering their past interactions and deep bond, it would be difficult to separate them. Perhaps he should let Lin Liangyu ask her directly—if she truly agreed, then there really would be nothing they could do about it. Would Baoyu really die if Daiyu were to become engaged to someone else? He pondered for a moment and said, "Jiang Jingxing is indeed a fine match. But you know the nature of my niece well; although it would be improper to speak openly in front of a young girl, we should still find some subtle way to get an idea of her feelings." "We will decide after further discussion." |

| 37 | 原來晴雯起先聽見良玉的言語知道替姜家求親，心裡就很怪她。後來聽見黛玉的光景就側著耳朵來聽，聽見她要動剪子，心裏就想道：「好個林姑娘，不負了寶玉。」就跑進來死命地奪那剪子，等到紫鵑趕進來，剪子早被晴雯奪去了。黛玉就哭起爹媽來，嚇得她哥哥打躬下跪，左不是右不是的勸了好些時候。黛玉重新發起性子，要操起剪子來。嚇得良玉千招萬認：「從今以後憑你做主，再不講起一個『姜』字。」又鬧了好些時方纔勸住。黛玉便歪在床上，良玉也怏怏地不回賈政，且過那邊來，見了白魯，只支吾著。這邊晴雯自從懶散之後一直地懶散下來，黛玉也知道她身心兩地，不大使喚她。今日見黛玉這箇樣子，只道一心拒絕姜景星，專向寶玉的意思，就十二分的殷勤伺候，比著紫鵑還親近些。誰知黛玉心裏一切掃除了，黛玉也看透了晴雯的心裏，也可憐她為寶玉的實心，也暗暗的冷笑。晴雯又叫麝月來，是一是二地告訴她。可可玉釧兒也送物事來碰在一處，就大家講了一遍。玉釧兒就告知王夫人。王夫人與李紈、寶釵等皆曉得。王夫人便告知賈政，賈政點點頭，正合了他的意兒。麝月也忙忙地奔回來告知寶玉，真把寶玉喜歡極了，想道：「好個林妹妹，什麼姜景星想吃天鵝肉呢！怪不道前日『我們我們』的拉拉扯扯地問，你往後再敢說『我們我們』的？」只有惜春、湘雲聽見了，卻知道黛玉另有一個意思。惜春就說道：「好個林姐姐，虧她拿得定，連我從前也是那麼樣纔得自由自在。」可怪史湘雲，只冷笑不言語。惜春道：「雲姐姐，你怎麼樣只管笑著，難道林姐姐還不算立得定麼？」 Originally, Qingwen had overheard Lin Liangyu's words and learned that he was acting on behalf of the Jiang family to propose marriage. She felt quite resentful toward Daiyu as a result. Later, upon seeing Daiyu's emotional state, Qingwen listened carefully from the side. When she heard that Daiyu was about to take out the scissors, a thought came to her mind: "What a fine Miss Lin—she is truly loyal to Baoyu." She rushed in and desperately tried to take the scissors away. By the time Zijuan ran in, Qingwen had already taken them. Daiyu began to cry for her parents, which frightened her brother so much that he bowed and knelt before her. He tried his best to comfort her, left and right, for quite some time. Daiyu then flew into a rage again and reached for the scissors once more. Terrified, Liangyu pleaded repeatedly: "From now on, you may make all the decisions yourself. I will never mention the name 'Jiang' again." They continued to argue for quite some time before finally calming her down. Daiyu then lay sideways on the bed, and Liangyu returned to Jia Zheng in a sullen mood. When he went over there and saw Bai Lu, he only gave vague responses. On this side, since Qingwen had become lazy, she remained so ever since. Daiyu also knew that her mind and body were not in harmony and did not use her much anymore. Today, seeing Daiyu in this state, Qingwen assumed that she was wholeheartedly rejecting Jiang Jingxing and devoting herself to Baoyu. As a result, she served her with utmost diligence and attentiveness, even more so than Zijuan. Little did anyone know that Daiyu had completely cleared her mind of all attachments. She saw through Qingwen's thoughts and, though she pitied the latter's genuine devotion to Baoyu, she secretly smiled with a hint of scorn. Qingwen then called over Shuyue and told her everything in detail, one by one. Coincidentally, Yuchuan also came to deliver something at the same time, and so they all gathered together and discussed it. Yuchuan then informed Lady Wang. Lady Wang, Li Wan, Baocai and others all became aware of the situation. Lady Wang then informed Jia Zheng, who nodded in agreement—this was exactly what he had intended. Shuyue hurried back to inform Baoyu, which made him overjoyed. He thought to himself, "What a wonderful little sister Lin! What makes that Jiang Jingxing think he can get away with wanting her like a goose?" "No wonder the other day you were dragging me around and asking all those 'we-we' questions. From now on, will you dare to say 'we-we' again?" Only Xichun and Xiangyun overheard this, yet they knew that Daiyu had a different intention in mind. Xichun said, "What a great Miss Lin! I admire how she has made up her mind. In the past, I was also like that before I could finally be free and at ease." Yet strangely enough, Shi Xiangyun only smiled coldly without saying a word. Xichun said, "Sister Xiangyun, why are you just smiling? Is Miss Lin not standing firm enough for your approval?" |

Therefore, he wanted to go see her again and explain his feelings, but fearing that Xiangyun and Xichun might be there, he first came to check things out. Unbeknownst to him, when he arrived and overheard their animated conversation, Baoyu called out, "Generally speaking, how should a person be?" |
| 44 | 湘雲、惜春倒嚇了一跳。湘雲便道：「你且坐下來聽我講。大凡人要成仙，不但自己心上一毫牽掛也沒有，也要天肯成全他。天若生了這個人，定了這個人的終身，人也不能拗他。你看從前這些成佛做祖的，也有歷盡魔障，也有跳出榮華，到底算起來許他歷得盡跳得過，這裏頭也有箇天在呢。這個根基也不是一世裏的緣故呢。」 Xiangyun and Xichun were both startled. Xiangyun said, "Sit down first and listen to me explain." Generally speaking, for a person to become an immortal, they must not only have no attachments in their heart but also be favored by Heaven. If Heaven has created a person and decided the course of their life, that person cannot defy it. Look at those who have become Buddhas or patriarchs in the past—some endured all kinds of trials and tribulations, others renounced worldly glory. In the end, it was Heaven that allowed them to endure and overcome these obstacles; there is always a role for Heaven in this process. "This foundation isn't something from just one lifetime." |

If you gradually accumulate thousands or hundreds of good deeds over many lifetimes and truly establish your own foundation, this is what it means for human will to triumph over Heaven." Ultimately, it still amounts to following the will of Heaven. If you are in a great rush to achieve something immediately, do you even know what kind of person you were in your past life? "Is this not the first time being human and already wanting to reach Heaven?" |

| 49 | 寶玉聽到剜心一句，忽的迷亂起來，面色雪白，身子就恍恍蕩蕩的忽然迷了本性，就立起身來向瀟湘館走，腳步兒也健，比往常時快了許多。一走進去，紫鵑、晴雯看他瘋瘋傻傻的，眼光一直地呆得很，叫他也不應，就一直地走進黛玉房裡來。看見黛玉坐在那裏也不站起來，他就坐下來嘻嘻笑著，黛玉正沒理會處，寶玉就傻笑道：「林姑娘，我為你想得病了。」只瞅著黛玉嘻嘻地笑，黛玉也知道他瘋了，就掉過頭走往林宅裏去。晴雯就走上前，拍拍寶玉道：「二爺回去歇歇吧。」 Baoyu, upon hearing the words about having his heart carved out, suddenly became confused and disoriented. His face turned deathly pale, and his body felt as if it were swaying unsteadily. Suddenly losing his true nature, he rose to his feet and began walking toward Xiaoxiang Pavilion. His steps were brisker than usual, much faster. As soon as he walked in, Zijuan and Qingwen saw that he was acting foolishly and crazily. His eyes were fixed and vacant; even when they called to him, he did not respond. He just kept walking straight into Daiyu's room. Seeing Daiyu sitting there, he did not get up but sat down and grinned foolishly. Just as Daiyu was about to ignore him, Baoyu said in a silly tone, "Miss Lin, I have fallen ill thinking of you." He just stared at Daiyu and grinned. Knowing that he had gone mad, Daiyu turned around and walked toward the Lin family residence. Qingwen stepped forward and patted Baoyu on the shoulder, saying, "Master Er, go back and rest." |
| 50 | 寶玉點點頭，笑道：「可不是，這就是我回去的時候了。」說著就立起來，迎著便是鶯兒進來。紫鵑先告訴她著了迷。這寶玉走得飛快，一直地要走到賈政住的老太太房裏去，虧得鶯兒、玉釧兒抱住了，叫道：「二爺醒醒兒，回去歇歇吧。」鶯兒便同玉釧兒扶他回來，將近進去，鶯兒看不過，就說道：「苦惱子，這不是林姑娘害的！」只這一句話提醒了寶玉。寶玉身子便就往前一栽，叫一聲：「狠心的……」哇的一口血直吐出來。｀玉釧兒慌了手腳，飛風地往上頭告訴去，駭得一家子一起奔了來，問的哭的擠了多少人。未知寶玉性命如何，且聽下回分解。 Baoyu nodded and smiled, saying, "Indeed it is. This is the time for me to return home." As he was speaking, he stood up, only to be met by Ying'er coming in. Zijuan had already told her that he had lost his wits. Go back and rest." Ying'er and Yuchuan supported him back, nearly reaching the entrance. Ying'er could no longer bear to see it and said, "Wretched fool, this isn't Miss Lin's fault!" These words suddenly reminded Baoyu of something. Baoyu's body suddenly lurched forward, and he cried out, "Heartless..." With a wail, he vomited blood. Yuchuan was flustered and ran off at full speed to inform the upper ranks. The news spread quickly, causing everyone in the household to rush over. Many people gathered, crying and asking questions. Whether Baoyu would survive or not will be revealed in the next chapter. |
