考尺度:按古者度以絲起。《隋志》曰:「蠶所吐絲為忽。十忽為秒,十秒為毫,十毫為釐,十釐為分。」《考工記·玉人》:「璧羨度尺,好三寸以為度,好三寸,所以為璧也。好,璧之孔也。裁其兩旁以益上下,所以為羨也。袤十寸,廣八寸,所以為度尺也。」則是十寸八寸,皆為尺矣。以十寸之尺起度,則十尺為丈,十丈為引。以八寸之尺起度,則八尺為㝷,倍㝷為常,此周制也。自漢以來,世無正尺。律度量衡,靡有孑遺,度無自起。儒先所謂子榖秬黍中者,徒有空言,了無實驗。心竭于思,口弊于議,不能決也。惟晉大始中,中書監荀朂尺,挍古物七品多合:一曰姑洗玉津,二曰小呂,三曰西京銅望臬,四曰金錯望臬,五曰銅斛,六曰古錢,七曰建武銅尺。依尺鑄律。時得漢時故鐘,吹律命之皆應。然時好推遷,諸代異制。《隋書》載尺十有五等,以荀尺為本。大槩周尺,漢劉歆尺,建武銅尺,宋祖沖之所傳尺,皆與荀氏一體。他如晉田父玉尺,漢官尺,魏杜夔尺,晉後尺,魏前尺、中尺、後尺,東魏後尺,銀錯銅龠尺,後周玉尺,宋氏尺,萬寳常水尺,劉曜渾儀尺,梁朝俗間尺,各與荀互異。自隋以來,荀尺亦莫傳用。唐有張文收律尺,有景表尺。五代有王朴律尺。宋則太府寺有尺四等,又高若訥嘗挍古尺十五等,李照胡翼之鄧保信各有黍尺。崇寧中,魏漢津乞用聖上指尺。又紹興中,內出金字牙尺二十八,遂以其中皇祐二年所造大樂,中黍尺作景鍾,然不知以何法累黍?程正叔定周尺,以為當省尺五寸五分弱,而省尺之度,卒難攷詳。朱元晦《家禮》載司馬氏及攷定雅樂黃鐘尺,不明言長短。則周尺之制,迄無成說。獨丁度建言:歴代尺度屢改,惟劉歆鑄銅斛之世,所鑄錯刀大泉五十,王莾天中鑄貨布貨泉之類,不聞後世有鑄者。遂以此四物參挍,分寸正同。況經籍制度,皆起周世。劉歆術業之博,祖沖之筭數之妙,晉荀氏之詳密,既合姬周之尺,則最可法者焉。但惜其事㝷罷,竟不施用。今試以諸品泉刀攷之:按《漢志》:「王莾更鑄大錢,徑寸二分,文曰大泉五十。天五年作貨布,長二寸五分,廣一寸,首長八分有竒,廣八分,其圜好徑二分半,足枝長八分,間廣二分。其文右曰貨,左曰布。貨泉,徑一寸,文右曰貨,左曰泉。」以貨布一分為率,㕘較其首身足枝長廣之數以為尺,又以大泉之寸二分,貨泉之徑寸較之,彼此毫釐無差。足明丁之議為至當。而丁尺、荀尺、漢尺、周尺,一然無異。諸家影響之說,悉可廢矣。葢古人制度,必徵實乃信。非可以揣摩定,非可以口舌爭。不見古物而欲知古人之制,自不可得。荀丁二氏,蹠實之見,千載同符。今荀氏所攷古物七事,多不可得,而漢錢傳于世者,則往往有之。據此以求周漢之度,以㝷昔人定律、制器、營室、分田之數,殆為灼然無疑者也。
