及敦死,札、故吏并诣阙讼周氏之冤,宜加赠谥。事下八坐,尚书卞壶议以「札石头之役开门延寇遂使贼敦恣乱,札之责也。追赠意所未安。懋、筵兄弟宜复本位。」司徒王导议以「札在石头,忠存社稷,义在亡身。至于往年之事,自臣等有识以上,与札情岂有异!此言实贯于圣鉴,论者见奸逆既彰,便欲征往年已有不臣之渐。即复使尔,要当时众所未悟。既悟其奸萌,札与臣等便以身许国,死而后已,札亦寻取枭夷。朝廷檄命既下,大事既定,便正以为逆党。邪正失所,进退无据,诚国体所宜深惜。臣谓宜与周顗、戴若思等同例。」尚书令希鉴议曰:「夫褒贬臧否,宜令体明例通。今周、戴以死节复位,周札以开门同例,事异赏均,意所疑惑。如司徒议,谓往年之事自有识以上皆与札不异,此为邪正坦然有在。昔宋文失礼,华乐荷不臣之罚;齐灵嬖孽,高厚有从昏之戮。以古况今,谯王、周、戴宜受若此之责,何加赠复位之有乎!今据已显复,则札宜贬责明矣。」导重议曰:「省令君议,必札之开门与谯王、周、戴异。今札开门,直出风言,竟实事邪?便以风言定褒贬,意莫若原情考徵也。论者谓札知隗、协乱政,信敦匡救,茍匡救信,奸佞除,即所谓流四凶族以隆人主巍巍之功耳。如此,札所以忠于社稷也。后敦悖谬出所不图,札亦阖门不同,以此灭族,是其死于为义也。夫信敦当时之匡救,不图将来之大逆,恶隗、协之乱政,不失为臣之贞节者,于时朝士岂惟周、札邪!若尽谓不忠,惧有诬乎谯王、周、戴。各以死卫国,斯亦人臣之节也。但所见有同异,然期之于必忠,故宜申明耳。即如今君议,宋华、齐高其在隗、协矣。昔子纠之难,召忽死之,管仲不死。若以死为贤,则管仲当贬;若以不死为贤,则召忽死为失。先典何以两通之?明为忠之情同也。死虽是忠之一目,亦不必为忠皆当死也。汉祖遗约,非刘氏不王,非功臣不侯,违命天下共诛之。后吕后王诸吕,周勃从之,王陵廷争,可不谓忠乎?周勃诛吕尊文,安汉社稷,忠莫尚焉,则王陵又何足言,而前史两为美谈。固知死与不死,争与不争,茍原情尽意,不可定于一概也。且札阖棺定谥,违逆党顺,受戮凶邪,不负忠义明矣。」鉴又驳不同,而朝廷竟从导议,追赠札卫尉,遣使者祠以少牢。
