1 ●王序
2 從來軍中不言文,非謂無用文地也;戎馬倥傯,事機呼吸,何暇選言騁辭、為文章以名於世。雖然,固有之。古人誓師,可垂為經;號令條教,皆有文理。是以磨盾草檄,傳為美談;而傅修期上馬擊賊、下馬作露布,先哲以英雄艷之。豈古人果大勝今人哉?古人原未嘗有意為文,說理談事,如家常告語,其胸中有惻隱羞惡,真性情流露行墨間,則為至文。今人雕肝琢腎,句造字錘,有藻繪而無義理,有浮華而無神氣,風雲、月露、花鳥、蟲魚之外,不知宇宙中複有何事可以為文者;則其所謂文非文,而所當文者又不能文也。
3 夫讀書期於適用,立言務在可行。學而不達於政,言而不宜於行,是沾沾者奚益乎?餘生平不好為文,亦不樂觀無用之文,故於世俗所標榜稱名士、嘐嘐自詡風流者,概未敢有所許可。不意今乃得之鹿洲山人!
4 山人,閩中儒者,以振興絕學為己任,紹衣濂洛,或疑其近於迂。然自童年喜談兵,講求經世理物之宜。所過山海要害、民生區畫,靡不鏤心默識,時人莫之知也。雍正五年夏五月,餘令東粵之海豐。秋,山人亦宰普寧。普寧,蕞爾邑,無足治。上官聞其才,檄攝潮陽篆。潮陽煩劇甲東粵,山人為政日有聲。餘兩人既壤相接,諸事得相聞,徒以各有分士,未得恆相見。越一載,餘偶以不樂自劾棄官;而山人亦為造物者所忌,假手讒人以去。旅中無事,始得數過從,盡窺山人所著述。於戲!如山人者,豈得以文士目之哉!學適於世用,而心常存乎世道人心;詞不尚浮誇,而論切中乎人情物理。餘不知古所謂才者何如,然以耳目所及見聞,蓋亦尠矣!
5 雍正十年,餘兩人又同客廣州,得朝夕繼見,殊歡甚。山人舊有東征一集,乃康熙六十年台灣朱一貫盜兵時,山人從統師藍公荊璞運籌閫外所著者。雖海島沙蟲,不足勞山人部署,而決機料敵,往往如神。即閒情所寓,紀事紀游,皆有深心,不為苟作。風行海內,已歷歲年。餘惜其板字漫漶,且詢知前刻倉皇,未及竣備,為檢軍中舊稿,更加選評,又得賢居停為鳩工匠,不兩月而新雕複成。山人著書滿家,餘獨喜是書成於戎馬倥傯、事機呼吸之餘,而整暇從容,有古人誓令遺意;且能使東寧山川形勢了如指掌,不必身親其地而歷歷如在目前;又言皆有用,非徒為無益之虛談也。於是乎書。
6 雍正十年秋七月,同學弟天長王者輔拜手題。
