漢人歌謡之採入樂府者,如《上留田》、《霍家奴》、《羅敷行》之類,多言當世事。少陵所作新題樂府,題雖異於古人,而深得古人之理。元白以後,此體紛紛矣,總而言之,制詩以協於樂一也;採詩入樂二也;古有此曲,倚其聲為詩三也;自制新曲四也;擬古五也;詠古題六也;並少陵之新題樂府而為七,古樂府盡此矣。唐末有長短句,宋有詞,金有北曲,元有南曲,今有北人之小曲,南人之吳歌,皆樂府之餘裔也。樂府不難知,而今人都不觧,請具言之:太白祖述騷雅,下逮梁陳,七言無所不包,奇之又竒,而字字有本。諷刺沉切,自古未有也。後人宜以為法。樂府本詞多平美,晉、魏、宋、齊樂府取奏多牙不可通,由樂人於不合宮商者增損其文,又或有聲無文,聲詞混填至於不可通者,非本詩如是也。李於鱗乃取晉、宋、齊、隋樂志所載,截而句擬之,生吞活剝,謂之擬樂府。而宗子相所作,全不可通。陳子龍效之,讀之使人失笑。王元美論歌行,云有奇句奪人魄者,直以為歌行而不知其為擬古樂府也。樂府詞體不一,漢人承離騷之後,故歌謡多奇語;魏武悲涼慷慨,與詩人不同。而史志所載,亦有平美者,班媫妤《團扇》、《青青河畔草》皆樂府也。鍾伯敬承于鱗之說,遂謂竒詭牙者為樂府,平羙者為詩,至謂古詩某句似樂府,樂府某句似古詩,謬之極矣。
