因看等說性曰論性要須先識得性是箇甚麽様物事必大錄此下云性畢竟無形影只是心中所有底道理是也程子性即理也此說最好今且以理言之畢竟却無形影只是這一箇道理在人仁義禮智性也然四者有何形狀亦只是有如此道理有如此道理便做得許多事出來所以能惻隱羞惡辭遜是非也譬如論藥性性寒性熱之類藥上亦無討這形狀處只是服了後卻做得冷做得熱底便是性便只是仁義禮智孟子說仁義禮智根於心如曰惻隱之心便是心上說情又曰邵堯夫說性者道之形體心者性之郛郭此說甚好蓋道無形體只性便是道之形體然若無箇心卻將性在甚處湏是有箇心便收拾得這性發用出來蓋性中所有道理只是仁義禮智便是實理吾儒以性為實釋氏以性為空若是指性來作心說則不可今人徃徃以心來說性湏是先識得方可說必大録云若指有知覺者為性只是說得心字如有天命之性便有氣質若以天命之性為根於心則氣質之性又安頓在何處謂如人心惟危道心惟微都是心不成只道心是心人心不是心一身之中裏面有五臟六腑外面有耳目口鼻四肢這是人人都如此存之為仁義禮智發出來為惻隱羞惡恭敬是非人人都有此以至父子兄弟夫婦朋友君臣亦莫不皆然至於物亦莫不然但其拘於形拘於氣而不變然亦就他一角子有發見處看他也自有父子之親有牝牡便是有夫婦有大小便是有兄弟就他同類中各有羣衆便是有朋友亦有主腦便是有君臣只縁本來都是天地所生共這根蔕所以大率多同聖賢出來撫臨萬物各因其性而導之如昆蟲草木未嘗不順其性如取之以時用之有節當春生時不殀夭不覆巢不殺胎草木零落然後入山林獺祭魚然後虞人入澤梁豺祭獸然後田獵所以能使萬物各得其所者惟是先知得天地本來生生之意
