物之寓世,未尝不韬形灭影,隐质遐外,以全性栖命者也。夫含奇佩美,衒异露才者,未有不以此伤性毁命者也。故翠以羽自残,龟以智自害,舟以含色磨肌,石以抱玉碎质。此四者,生于异俗,与人非不隔也,托性于山林,寄情于物外,非有求于人也,然而自贻伊患者,未能隐其形也。若使翠敛翮于明丘之林,则解羽之患脱;龟曳尾于旸谷之泥,则钻灼之患不至;丹伏光于春山之底,则磨肌之患绝;石亢体于玄圃之喦,则剖琢之忧不及。故穷岩曲岫之梓榤,生于积石,颖贯青天,根凿黄泉,分条布叶,轮菌磊硊,骐驎戏其下,鵷鸾游其颠,浮云栖其侧,清风激其间,终岁无毫厘之忧,免刀斧之害者,非与人有德也,能韬隐其质,故致全性也。路侧之榆,樵人采其条,匠者伐其柯,馀有尺蘖,而为行人所折者,非与人有雠也,然而致寇者,形不隐也。周鷄断尾,获免牺牲;山狙见巧,终必招害。由此言之,则出处之理,亦可知矣。是以古之有德者,韬迹隐智,以密其外;澄心封情,以定其内。内定则神腑不乱,外密则形骸不扰。以此处身,不亦全乎?

至道无言,非立言无以明其理;大象无形,非立言无以侧其奥。道象之妙,非言不津;津言之妙,非学不传。未有不因学而鉴道,不假学以光身者也。夫蠒缲以为丝,织为缣纨,缋以黼黻,则王侯服之;人学为仪,雕以文藻,而世人荣之。蠒之不缲,则素丝蠹于筐笼;人之不学,则才智腐于心胸。海蚌未剖,则明珠不显;昆竹未断,则凤音不彰;性情未鍊,则神明不发。譬诸金木,金性苞水,木性藏火。故鍊金则水出,钻木而火生。人能务学,钻鍊其性,则才慧发矣。青出于蓝而青于蓝,染使然也;冷生于水而冷于水,寒使然也;镜出于金而明于金,莹使然也;戎夷之子,生而同声,长而异语,教使然也。山抱玉而草木润焉,川贮珠而岸不枯焉,口纳滋味而百节肥焉,心受典诰而五性通焉。故不登峻岑,不知天之高;不瞰深谷,不知地之厚;不游六艺,不知智之深。远而光华者,节也;近而愈明者,学也。故吴簳质劲,非筈羽而不美;越剑性利,非淬砺而不銛;人性懁慧,非积学而不成。沿浅以及深,披暗而覩明。不可以传闻称,非得以汍滥善也。夫遇乡者心务见家,不可以一步至也,慕学者情缠典素,不可以一读能也。故为山者基于一篑之土,以成千丈之峭;凿井者起于三寸之坎,以就万仞之深。灵珠如豆,不见其长,叠岁而大;铙舌如指,不觉其损,累时而折。悬岩滴溜,终能穿石;规车牵索,卒至断轴。水非石之钻,绳非木之锯,然而断穿者,积渐之所成也。耳形完而听不闻者,聋也;目形全而视不见者,盲也;人性美而不监道者,不学也。耳之初窒,目之始昧,必不恡百金,逆医千里。人不涉学,犹心之聋盲,不知远祈明师,以攻心术,性之蔽也。故宣尼临没,手不释卷;仲舒垂卒,口不辍诵;有子恶卧,自碎其掌;苏生患睡,亲锥其股。以圣贤之性,犹好学无倦,矧庸人而可怠哉?
