夫民有血氣心知之性,而無哀樂喜怒之常,應感而動,然後心術形焉。師古曰:「言人之性感物則動也。術,道徑也。心術,心之所由也。形,見也。」是以纖微癄瘁一作「衰)之音作,而民思憂;師古曰:「癄瘁,謂減縮也,音子笑反。」闡諧嫚易之音作,而民康樂;師古曰:「闡,廣也。諧,和也。嫚易,言不急刻也。易音弋豉反。」麤厲猛奮之音作,而民剛毅;師古曰:「麤厲,抗厲也。猛奮,發揚也。麤作字,非是。」廉直正誠之音作,而民肅敬;寬裕和順之音作,而民慈愛;師古曰:「裕,饒也。」流辟邪散之音作,而民淫亂。師古曰:「辟讀曰僻。」先王恥其亂也,故制雅頌之聲,本之情性,稽之度數,制之禮儀,師古曰:「稽,考也。」合生氣之和,導五常之行,師古曰:「生氣,陰陽之氣也。導,引也。」使之陽而不散,陰而不集,師古曰:「集謂聚滯也。」剛氣不怒,柔氣不懾,師古曰:「懾,恐也,音之涉反。」四暢交於中,而發作於外,師古曰:「暢,通達也。」皆安其位而不相奪,足以感動人之善心也,不使邪氣得接焉,是先王立樂之方也。
