己亥，上大漸，《書·顧命》云：疾大漸。呂祖謙《注》曰：疾大進而瀕於死也。以江州刺史桂陽王休範為司空，又以尚書右僕射褚淵為護軍將軍，加中領軍劉勔右僕射，勔，彌兗翻。詔淵、勔與尚書令袁粲、荊州刺史蔡興宗、郢州刺史沈攸之並受顧命。褚淵素與蕭道成善，引薦於上，詔又以道成為右衞將軍，領衞尉，左、右衞，晉官；衞尉，漢官也。史言禁衞兵柄皆歸道成。與袁粲等共掌機事。是夕，上殂。年三十四。庚子，太子卽皇帝位，大赦。時蒼梧王方十歲，袁粲、褚淵秉政，承太宗奢侈之後，務弘節儉，欲救其弊；而阮佃夫、王道隆等用事，貨賂公行，不能禁也。佃，音田。

右軍將軍王道隆以蔡興宗彊直，不欲使居上流，閏月甲辰，以興宗為中書監，更以沈攸之為都督荊·襄等八州諸軍事、荊州刺史。興宗辭中書監不拜。王道隆每詣興宗，躡履到前，不敢就席，良久去，竟不呼坐。

八月戊午，樂安宣穆公蔡興宗卒。
