山川大阜在臨清州北二里，廣百餘里運河自東昌府清平縣境北流至臨清州城南，貫城而北，衛河自西來會為一，又東北逕夏津、武城、恩縣之西，入濟南府徳州界，自陽又文官空口舖入府境，北至臨清州監店，自兖州府陽谷縣至此，長一百七十七里，即元明以來會通河舊道，皆汶水也，是為上河閘凡九，自臨清州監店，北至直●呉橋縣降民口，長二百二十七里，皆衛水也，是為下河不設閘，今皆謂之運河。《明史河渠志》：正統十三年，河决沙灣，臨清告涸，侍郎趙榮則請置減水石壩，以蓄運河之水，四年土壊，運道仍阻，尚書石璞鑿河三里以避决口，明年，運河膠淺如故，漕舟俱蟻聚臨清上下，都御史徐有貞請置減水閘，開分水河，挑運河，工竣，會通復安 本朝順治九年，河决安平堤，浸及東昌府城，浸堂邑、博平、臨清各堤閘，總河楊方興塞之。康熙六十年，黄沁並决，修東昌各屬堤岸，以衛運河。乾隆三年，修建聊城縣房家口進水，唯以洩白家窪滙聚之水入運，又修博平縣三教堂成水閘，洩運河之水，由引河入馬頬河。十八年，重修聊城縣十里鋪進水閘，以洩曹州府鄆城縣西南諸邑之水入運。三十二年，添建臨清月河單閘，以洩運河之水入衛，凡皆先事綢繆，相機防䕶，而嵗修之工不與焉，此運河所以深通無滯也。康煕二十八年，聖祖南巡，親閲運河堤，有御製詩，乾隆三十年。
