44  | 王嘉字公仲，平陵人也。以明经射策甲科为郎，坐户殿门失阑免。察廉为南陵丞。鸿嘉中，举敦朴能直言，召见宣室，对政事得失，超迁大中大夫。出为九江、河南太守，治甚有声。徵入为大鸿胪，徒京兆尹，御史大夫。建平三年，为丞相，封新甫侯。后以哀帝益封董贤，嘉封上，诏书下韶狱。嘉卬天叹曰：「幸得充备宰相，不能进贤退不肖，以是负国，死有馀责。」吏问贤不肖主名，嘉曰：「贤，故丞相孔光、故大司空何武，不能进；恶，高安侯董贤父子，佞邪乱朝，而不能退。罪当死。」遂不食死。 |
